But the presence of a DJ mixer in that photograph — before any formal DJ practice, before any club residency, before the ISO50 blog existed — reveals something important about how Hansen’s technical imagination worked from the beginning. The DJ mixer was, at its most basic level, a device for blending sources in real time. It was hardware that invited physical interaction, that rewarded having something to touch rather than something to click. That preference never changed. It simply became more specific as the years passed and the practice deepened.
The ASR-X Pro at the center of that early setup is worth noting in its own right. It was a drum machine and synthesizer built around drum pads rather than keys, which meant that from the very beginning Hansen was experiencing music-making as a physical, tactile activity rather than a purely visual or conceptual one. He recorded into the ASR-X Pro’s internal sampler, which held approximately six minutes of audio, and bounced everything to MiniDisc for archiving. The entire chain could handle almost nothing. Around the same period, Hansen was attending electronic music events in the Sacramento area — warehouse happenings in Rancho Cordova, shows along Auburn Boulevard — where he encountered DJs for the first time as working practitioners of a discipline he could begin to understand and eventually inhabit. He became particularly fascinated by Photek and Roni Size, British drum and bass producers whose intricate rhythmic structures and atmospheric density opened his ears to what electronic music could achieve technically. The San Francisco Years and Laptop DJing

Serato Scratch Live had appeared in 2004, allowing DJs to use time-coded vinyl to control digital audio files, preserving the tactile experience of vinyl while removing its logistical constraints. Traktor, Native Instruments’ DJ software platform, was expanding its feature set and building a user base among the emerging generation of producer-DJs. And Ableton Live, which Hansen was already using for composition and arrangement in the studio, had begun attracting DJs who wanted to work with looped, clip-based material in ways that exceeded the capabilities of a conventional mixer.
Hansen’s earliest documented DJ sets — the ISO50 blog mixes and the SoundCloud recordings that predate the Burning Man era — almost certainly involved a laptop running Ableton Live. The Ableton setup that played them back was functional. But it was not satisfying.
Hansen articulated the problem with laptop DJing directly, in a post on the ISO50 blog that has since become frequently cited in discussions of his technical philosophy. He wrote that he requires the “tactile feedback of knobs and sliders” to feel genuinely engaged in a performance. The laptop-and-trackpad interface, however well-suited to studio work, did not translate meaningfully to the physical reality of a dark booth with a crowd present and no time to think. The screen demanded visual attention that should have been directed at the room. The keyboard and mouse rewarded a kind of focused, seated precision that the standing, scanning, rapid-decision-making reality of DJ performance made difficult to access. Pioneer released the DDJ series, Native Instruments released Traktor Kontrol hardware, and a generation of producer-DJs who had learned to mix on laptops began looking for ways to add physical control without committing to the full infrastructure of professional CDJs. For someone with Hansen’s skill set — comfortable in Ableton, experienced with MIDI controllers from his studio work, sensitive to the tactile dimension of performance — a controller bridging software and hardware would have offered an appealing middle ground.
The specifics of this intermediate phase in Hansen’s setup are not precisely documented in the public record. What is documented is the destination: the CDJ-based configuration that he had solidified by the time his Burning Man sunrise sets began drawing significant attention in 2014. The inference is that the transition to dedicated hardware controllers, and then from controllers to professional CDJs, occurred in the years immediately preceding the first documented sunrise set. Adopting the Industry Standard: Pioneer CDJs and the DJM Mixer
The critical shift in Hansen’s technical setup came as his visibility on the festival circuit grew and the practical realities of touring as a DJ became more concrete. Playing clubs and festivals means navigating whatever gear is already installed in the booth, and in virtually every professional DJ booth in the world, that gear is Pioneer DJ’s CDJ and DJM ecosystem. Adopting this configuration was not a capitulation to convenience. It was a pragmatic recognition that performing reliably across hundreds of different venues requires standardization.
The CDJ-2000NXS2 is the media player at the center of Hansen’s documented technical rider, and it represents the apex of Pioneer’s established CDJ line at the time he solidified his hardware approach. The unit combines deep integration with Rekordbox — Pioneer’s DJ preparation and performance software — with the ability to play entirely in standalone mode from a USB drive. This eliminates any need for a connected laptop on stage. Each CDJ-2000NXS2 features a large high-resolution waveform display, a responsive capacitive jog wheel with adjustable tension, a comprehensive suite of playback controls including memory cue points and loop functions, and robust BPM and beat-grid analysis built into the playback interface.

Alongside the CDJs, Hansen’s rider specifies the Pioneer DJM-900NXS2 mixer, or its successor the DJM-A9. The DJM-900NXS2 has functioned as the de facto club standard for over a decade, and its deep integration with the Rekordbox ecosystem — including automatic BPM synchronization with connected CDJs and shared beat analysis data — is central to why it anchors his setup. An inaccurate beat grid would corrupt the usefulness of the DJM’s Beat FX section, since effects synchronized to an incorrect BPM value slip out of phase with the actual music, creating an interference pattern rather than a cohesive blend.
Beyond analysis, Hansen sets memory cue points within tracks — markers stored in the Rekordbox database and burned to the USB drive alongside the audio file. This organizational philosophy mirrors the three-act structure of his Burning Man sets. The USB becomes a navigational map of the set’s emotional geography, allowing him to move between phases without losing orientation during a two-hour performance when the pressure is highest.
Hansen travels to every gig with two USB drives carrying identical content. The redundancy is absolute and non-negotiable. A USB drive failure at 5:40 a.m. in the Nevada desert, or in the middle of a club set at 1:00 a.m. at Output in Brooklyn, is not an acceptable single point of failure. The backup drive goes in a pocket, not in a bag.
The Signal Chain: From Library to Speaker
The complete signal chain for a Hansen DJ set is considerably simpler than the elaborate dual-computer-and-outboard-rack infrastructure of the Tycho live band show — and that simplicity is a feature, not a limitation.
The audio path begins on the USB drive. Rekordbox-analyzed tracks in AIFF or WAV format — lossless audio, not MP3 — are loaded into either CDJ via the media players’ onboard library interface. Hansen loads the next track on whichever CDJ is not currently playing, navigating the library using the CDJ’s jog wheel as a selector rather than as a platter control. Once cued, the track waits at its designated memory cue point.
From the CDJs, audio passes via RCA connections into the DJM’s input channels. The DJM’s four-channel architecture means Hansen can have two CDJs feeding Channels 1 and 2 (or any configuration he prefers), with the remaining channels available for additional inputs if the venue’s booth setup requires flexibility. In practice, for his standalone performances, only the two CDJ channels are active.
Within the DJM’s channel strips, each signal passes through the three-band EQ — independent control over high, mid, and low frequencies per channel — before reaching the channel fader. The EQ section is the primary real-time tool for managing frequency overlap during transitions. Hansen’s approach to EQ in the blend is described in detail below, but the signal architecture is important: the EQ operates before the fader, which means frequency sculpting can happen at any channel volume, including when the fader is fully open.

From the DJM’s master output, the signal passes to the venue’s front-of-house system. Unlike the live band show — which involves Peter Franco’s elaborate analog outboard rack, Empirical Labs Distressors, Universal Audio LA-2A, and Avalon VT-737sp tube strips — the DJ set’s signal arrives at the venue’s console without any of Hansen’s own processing inserted downstream of the mixer. The DJ set relies entirely on the quality of Pioneer’s built-in digital signal path and the venue’s own front-of-house infrastructure. There is no external analog warmth added by Hansen’s touring equipment, because there is no touring equipment. The DJM-900NXS2’s internal converters and digital mixing circuitry are the entirety of the processing chain.
This is not an oversight. It reflects the DJ format’s philosophical core: the music should be able to speak for itself, and any context that adds layers of technical infrastructure between the selection and the listener is obscuring the fundamental act rather than serving it.
Ableton’s Presence and Absence in the DJ Context
The most clarifying way to understand Hansen’s DJ technical setup is to trace what is absent from it. The Tycho live band show is built on a dual-computer REAPER/Ableton architecture, a SMPTE timecode chain, UAD Apollo interfaces with hardware DSP, per-song project tabs, MIDI controller mapping, and a front-of-house analog outboard rack. None of this is present in the DJ booth.
Hansen has been explicit about this. In the same MusicTech context in which he described the live show’s dual-computer dependency, he noted that the DJ set runs entirely without a laptop. No Ableton. No REAPER. No timecode. No synchronized visuals (except in specific festival contexts where the venue itself provides visual programming). The CDJs and DJM form a self-contained, closed system that requires no external software to function.
This represents a deliberate reversal of the trajectory that began in the Ableton laptop years. Hansen arrived at Ableton-based DJing because it leveraged existing studio software knowledge. He departed from it because the software interface stood between him and the music in ways that hardware did not. The CDJ-Rekordbox workflow preserves the preparation advantages of software — analysis, cue points, library organization — while relocating performance itself entirely to physical hardware. The Rekordbox software is used in the studio during preparation. It is not running on a connected laptop in the booth. Rekordbox’s function, during the set, is already complete.
The one partial exception to this involves custom edits. Hansen’s more recent sets — particularly from 2023 onward — incorporate a substantial number of tracks credited as “[Tycho Edit],” indicating reworked versions of other artists’ tracks that have been modified in a DAW for specific DJ purposes. These edits are made in either Ableton or REAPER depending on the nature of the modification — a structural rearrangement might favor REAPER’s linear timeline, while a clip-based loop extension might be quicker in Ableton’s Session View. The completed edit is then exported as a standard audio file, analyzed in Rekordbox, and added to the USB library like any other track. The DAW’s involvement ends before the gig begins.

The technical setup becomes meaningful only in the context of how Hansen actually mixes. His approach is built on a set of principles that distinguish it from the rapid-transition style of peak-time house and techno DJs and align it instead with a longer-form, more architecturally patient tradition.

Hansen’s transitions regularly extend across three to five minutes — sometimes longer for particularly complex blends or at structurally significant moments in the set. The DJM’s three-band EQ is the primary tool for managing frequency overlap during long blends. A characteristic Hansen approach involves progressively reducing the low-end energy of the outgoing track — pulling the bass EQ down incrementally over the first minute or two of the blend, simultaneously introducing the incoming track’s bass gradually — so that the transition in low-frequency content, which is the most physically felt dimension of a dance-floor mix, happens slowly enough to feel natural rather than abrupt. Hansen articulated this approach in terms that apply equally to his studio work: “You’re playing the effects just like you’re playing the instruments.” In the DJ context, the DJM’s effects section is not a post-processing tool applied after the compositional decisions are made. Beatmatching and Tempo Management
Hansen’s approach to beatmatching reflects his background in both production and CDJ-based performance. He does not rely on Sync — the CDJ/DJM feature that automatically locks one deck to the other’s tempo — as a crutch, but neither does he perform the entirely manual pitch-adjustment beatmatching that vinyl purists insist upon as the only authentic approach. His position is practical: the CDJ’s pitch fader and the waveform display provide enough tactile and visual information to execute accurate beatmatching manually, and the precision of that process rewards practice rather than automation.
For material that conforms to a rigid BPM grid, the CDJ’s built-in beat grid display makes alignment straightforward. For material with organic tempo drift — Boards of Canada tracks recorded with live elements, for instance, or anything with subtle swing — the waveform display becomes the primary reference, with Hansen monitoring the phase relationship between the two tracks visually and adjusting pitch manually as needed. The CDJ-2000NXS2’s fine pitch adjustment (accessible via the pitch fader combined with a mode button) allows corrections in fractions of a percent rather than the coarse increments that make manual alignment of complex material difficult.
Beatless Material and Energy Management
Among the most technically demanding elements of Hansen’s DJ practice is his willingness to work with beatless or near-beatless material. Boards of Canada tracks like “ROYGBIV” and “Kaini Industries,” Aphex Twin’s more contemplative recordings, Ulrich Schnauss’s long atmospheric passages, and passages from his own demo and ambient work do not conform to the four-on-the-floor framework that makes conventional beatmatching meaningful. Playing this material in a DJ set creates challenges around energy maintenance and crowd communication that simple BPM management cannot address.
The CDJ-2000NXS2’s ability to pitch-shift material slightly without audible artifacts at normal playback speeds allows Hansen to gently adjust the internal pacing of beatless material — not to make it conform to a tempo it was never built around, but to subtly align its internal sense of movement with what the audience has just experienced. The goal is not technical precision but psychological continuity: a beatless passage that feels disconnected from what preceded it will deflate the room, while one that arrives with the right internal tempo relationship to the outgoing track will feel like a deepening rather than an interruption.
Energy management through beatless passages is also a matter of DJM fader work. Keeping a purely ambient track at a level where it functions as a dreamlike overlay rather than a full-reset interruption — perhaps sixty percent of full channel volume rather than the full throw used for rhythmic material — maintains the sense of forward motion even when the kick drum is absent. When the beatless passage concludes and a new rhythmic track begins its entry, the fader movement itself becomes a readable gesture: a signal to the audience that the atmospheric drift is ending and the rhythmic ground is returning.
Hansen tends to position beatless moments at structurally significant points rather than using them as connective tissue. At the moment of sunrise, when crowd attention is already directed outward toward the natural event, a beatless track can meet that outward attention without competing for it. Effects Processing During DJ Sets
The DJM-900NXS2’s and DJM-A9’s onboard effects sections form the entirety of Hansen’s effects processing in the DJ context. There is no external effects unit in his DJ setup — no rackmount reverb, no standalone delay, no hardware distortion. Everything that happens to the audio between the CDU outputs and the DJM’s master output is accomplished within the mixer’s digital signal chain.
This is a significant departure from the live band setup, where an elaborate boutique pedalboard — Strymon BigSky, Strymon TimeLine, Chase Bliss Tonal Recall, Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Memory Man, Meris Mercury7, and numerous other units — forms the core of Hansen’s guitar and synthesizer processing. The DJ setup has none of this. The DJM’s Beat FX and Sound Color FX sections are, by comparison, relatively limited in scope and adjustability. But within their constraints, they are extraordinarily well-designed for the specific application of real-time DJ blending.
The Beat FX Hansen uses most consistently are Reverb, Delay, and Echo — the spatial effects that blur rhythmic outlines and extend tonal content across transitions. The Filter in the Sound Color FX section — a single knob sweeping from low-pass to high-pass with a neutral position in the center — is one of the most-used real-time tools in his set: pulling the high-pass side (which removes bass energy) to thin out the outgoing track’s low end, or pulling the low-pass side (which removes treble) to create a dramatic, bass-heavy build on the incoming track.
The Reverb Beat FX on the DJM is time-synced, which means at longer sync values it can create spectacularly long, diffuse reverb tails that wash over transition moments with an effect qualitatively similar to the massive hardware reverbs Hansen uses in the studio.
