The evidence from Tycho’s actual audience suggests the hopeful version is already present in embryonic form. The people who love Tycho most are not loving a style. They are loving the specific creative intelligence of Scott Hansen — a person who grew up along the American River in Sacramento, who moved to San Francisco and lost his relationship to the landscapes that fed him, who spent twenty years trying to translate the feeling of standing in a field at dawn into something other people could share. AI can approximate the result. It cannot produce the source.

That distinction will matter more, not less, as the ambient electronic landscape fills with algorithmic output. The music that survived the twentieth century’s commodification of recorded sound was not the music that was adequately pleasant. It was the music that was irreducibly itself — the product of a vision so specific that it could not be averaged away. Tycho’s best work has that quality.
