His first serious tool for answering that question was the Ensoniq ASR-X, and later the upgraded ASR-X Pro — a hybrid sampler and drum machine that used physical drum pads rather than piano keys as its primary interface. The choice of that machine would prove formative. Where a conventional sampler or sequencer might invite the user to program rhythms with a mouse, grid-clicking individual note events into place, the ASR-X demanded physical contact. Hansen flew O’Connor to San Francisco for an audition that took the form of a several-hour jam session in Hansen’s basement. What Hansen heard was not just technical precision but a rhythmic sensibility that complemented his own — a drummer who approached the kit with the same combination of precision and warmth that defined Tycho’s sonic identity. O’Connor got the job.

Awake: The First Full Live Drumming Era

And O’Connor’s approach to the live show reflects his understanding of that ambiguity: while he plays to a click track to maintain sync with the band’s complex audio-visual systems, he deliberately maintains what he describes as a “natural push-and-pull” of micro-deviations from the exact grid. These tiny fluctuations — milliseconds ahead of or behind the mathematical beat — are what keep live performances visceral rather than mechanical. They are the living proof that there is a human being at the kit.

This deliberate imprecision within precision is a microcosm of the entire Tycho philosophy: Hansen has consistently argued that the value of analog hardware and live performance lies in the “accidents” and imperfections that pure digital execution cannot produce. Weather (2019) introduced two major changes to Tycho’s creative architecture: the arrival of vocalist Hannah Cottrell (Saint Sinner) and an unprecedented inversion of the compositional process, one that put rhythm at the center of creation in a way it had never been before. The innovation was the “Rory Library” — a custom collection of drum recordings that O’Connor made before a single song existed.

The process unfolded at Decibel Studios with recording engineer Robert Cheek. O’Connor arrived at the sessions without any musical material to play against. Nitemoves music is not drum-forward in an obvious sense. Like Tycho, it tends toward atmospherics and texture, building worlds from sound rather than showcasing any individual instrument. From Programming to Performance: What Changed and What Didn’t

Looking across the full arc of Tycho’s rhythmic history — from the ASR-X loops of the early 2000s to the Kaelin Ellis breaks of Infinite Health, with O’Connor’s transformative live kit tenure in between — certain consistent principles emerge even as the methods changed dramatically.

The most important is the primacy of feel over precision. Hansen has never been a producer who values the mechanically perfect drum grid. The ASR-X appealed to him partly because of its 12-bit grit, which undermined perfectionism at the level of fidelity. His use of hardware and analog processing across the entire studio chain is motivated by his belief that “imperfections” — tape warble, harmonic saturation, the slight variation of an analog oscillator — produce the emotional resonance that pure digital precision cannot. When O’Connor arrived and brought the micro-variations of live drumming into the music, he was delivering by different means the same essential quality Hansen had been pursuing through hardware processing.

The second consistent principle is the treatment of drums as texture. From the early records through the Awake era and beyond, Tycho’s drumming has never been about virtuosic display or rhythmic complexity for its own sake. The beats serve the atmosphere. They provide forward motion, articulate the structure of a piece, and contribute to the overall sonic character — but they do not dominate. O’Connor’s kit tuning choices (thumpy and dry, minimal sustain) align with this priority. The drums sound like drums, but they also sound like they belong in the same sonic space as a synthesizer sustained note or a processed guitar riff.

The third is the sample-based instinct that never fully left the music. Even in the Awake era, when O’Connor was playing a live kit in a professional studio with a full array of engineering talent, Hansen was still treating the recorded drums as material — as things to be cut, processed, and arranged in ways that the original performance did not prescribe. His instinct to “chop” and reorder his own musicians’ contributions, to treat recordings as raw material rather than fixed performances, is the instinct of the producer rather than the band leader. It connects the Weather “Rory Library” approach back to the early ASR-X days: in both cases, the act of separating the recorded performance from its context and using its fragments as compositional building blocks was central to how the music was made.

The early records — Science of Patterns, Sunrise Projector, Past Is Prologue — have a particularly intimate quality in their drumming. There is something handmade about even the most electronic-sounding moments on these records.

Dive sits at the threshold, the drums beginning to breathe and expand while retaining much of the earlier character. The album sounds like someone who has just discovered what professional recording environments can do for rhythm — cleaner, more open, with a wider dynamic range — but who hasn’t yet fully committed to the possibilities that live drumming will open.

Awake and Epoch are where the live kit became the defining rhythmic statement of the project. These records have a physicality in their rhythm that the earlier work simply didn’t have — not because O’Connor played loudly or aggressively, but because human drumming introduces a kind of weight and presence that programmed patterns cannot replicate. The snare on Awake sounds like a snare. The kick on Epoch is a physical event. And yet both albums remain recognizably Tycho, which speaks to how successfully Hansen integrated the new rhythmic reality into the project’s existing aesthetic.

Weather splits the difference in a fascinating way. Its rhythmic character is simultaneously human and sampled, live and processed, spontaneous and pre-composed. The “Rory Library” approach produced beats that carry the evidence of human performance — subtle variations in velocity, the natural envelope of a struck drum — inside the structure of a loop that has been treated and repositioned as a compositional block. It is one of the most interesting rhythmic achievements in the entire discography precisely because its category is ambiguous.

Infinite Health completes the circle back to electronic production while bringing the full weight of everything Hansen has learned across two decades. The Kaelin Ellis breaks are big and aggressive in a way that contrasts sharply with the controlled, textural drumming of the middle period, and the album’s energy reflects that contrast. It is Tycho in an outward, kinetic mode rather than the inward, reflective one that Awake and Epoch occupied.

The Ensoniq ASR-X’s pads gave him the tactile connection he needed. The 12-bit converters gave him the warmth he was looking for. And when Rory O’Connor sat down at a custom acrylic kit in Hansen’s basement in San Francisco and played for several hours while Hansen listened, what Hansen heard was the full realization of that early instinct: rhythm that was both precise and alive, both constructed and performed, both electronic in sensibility and thoroughly human in execution.
