The Problem of the Guitar in Electronic Music

There is something structurally peculiar about playing guitar in an electronic music project. The guitar is the most culturally loaded instrument in Western popular music — an instrument so thoroughly associated with rock, blues, country, folk, and their derivatives that it arrives in any context carrying enormous baggage. To place a guitar inside an electronic production is to import all of that history uninvited. The fretboard brings the blues scale, the amplifier brings association with power, the bent note brings tradition. Most electronic artists avoid this problem by avoiding the instrument entirely. Synthesizers have no such allegiances. A Moog does not remind you of anything except itself.

Scott Hansen chose the guitar anyway. And the way he chose it — as a non-virtuoso who never studied the instrument formally, processed through chains of effects until the guitar barely sounded like a guitar, in service of a project that was nominally electronic — reveals something essential about what Tycho is and why it occupies such unusual territory.

The guitar in Tycho’s music is not decorative. It is not a nod to indie credibility. It is not even primarily a lead melodic instrument, though it often plays melody. It is something more fundamental: the element that prevents the music from becoming abstraction. In a production built from synthesizers, samples, programmed drums, and endless layers of processing, the guitar is the point at which the whole edifice makes contact with a human hand in real time. The string vibrates. The pick attacks. The note bends. None of these things can be perfectly replicated by a sequencer, and Hansen knows it. The guitar is not in Tycho’s music despite the electronic context. It is in Tycho’s music because of it — because without some anchor to the physical, the music risks drifting into pure texture, beautiful but unattached.

Understanding this function requires understanding both the instrument and the man who plays it.


Hansen’s Guitar History: The Late Start and What It Meant

Scott Hansen did not grow up playing guitar. He was a runner, a drawer, a designer, a synthesizer explorer. His first encounters with music-making came through electronic equipment — the Roland MC-303 groovebox, rudimentary samplers, eventually drum machines and software sequencers. These tools suited a person who approached music the way he approached graphic design: spatially, visually, compositionally, without requiring the kind of physical dexterity that traditional instruments demanded.

By his own account, Hansen did not seriously engage with any traditional instrument until his early twenties — age twenty-one or twenty-two, he has said in interviews. Even then, the barrier felt high. He was surrounded in Sacramento’s underground music community by people who could genuinely play — guitarists with years of practice, drummers with physical facility, musicians who had been performing since childhood. “I didn’t play guitar or any traditional instruments at the time, so ‘normal music’ seemed really foreign, and basically impossible to break into,” he recalled. This sense of exclusion drove him toward the machines rather than the strings. The sequencer did not judge technique. It only asked that you find interesting things to do with it.

When Hansen eventually did turn to guitar, it was not through lessons or formal study. He is, by every available account, entirely self-taught on the instrument, learning by ear and by feel rather than by the systematic development of technique that a trained player would undergo. He has never claimed to be an accomplished guitarist. He does not describe himself in those terms. What he has described is something more honest and, in context, more interesting: guitar as a compositional escape route.

The psychological mechanism behind this is one of the most revealing things Hansen has ever said about his creative process. In his 2014 Reddit AMA, conducted one day before the release of Awake, he explained that Dive — an album that took nearly six years to complete — had left him trapped. The trap was visual. Because the piano keyboard is laid out in a pattern the eye can track, Hansen found himself recognizing the physical shapes his hands were making and falling into predictable harmonic ruts. The same progressions, the same moves. Visual familiarity became compositional repetition.

The guitar solved this problem not because Hansen was good at it, but because he was not. The fretboard was foreign. He could not fall back on patterns he had practiced for years because he had not practiced any patterns for years. Every note required genuine decision-making. The instrument’s unfamiliarity forced him to find things he would not otherwise have found. Awake, which was written in roughly eight months compared to Dive’s six years, emerged partly from this renewed spontaneity. The guitar’s foreignness was the point.

This is a creative phenomenon worth pausing on, because it runs counter to how technique is usually understood. Skill is supposed to unlock possibilities. And for many musicians it does. But for Hansen, working in a domain where he had already developed considerable skill — synthesis, sequencing, arrangement in a DAW — the introduction of a primitive skill on an unfamiliar instrument was liberating. He was, for the first time in years, in beginner’s mind on a melodic instrument. The melodies that resulted had a different character from the ones he had been programming. They were searching rather than arriving. Tentative rather than decisive. And that tentativeness, in the context of Tycho’s warm, enveloping productions, became its own expressive quality.


The Guitars: Documented Instruments

Hansen’s guitar collection reflects a consistent aesthetic preference for instruments whose inherent sonic character tends toward warmth, fullness, and a certain vintage looseness rather than precision and brightness.

The Fender Jazzmaster

The Jazzmaster has been one of the most consistently documented guitars in the Tycho setup. Introduced by Fender in 1958 and originally marketed to jazz players (who largely ignored it), the Jazzmaster became a fixture of alternative rock and shoegaze precisely because of characteristics that traditional players considered liabilities: its floating tremolo system produces an unstable pitch quality when strings are bent aggressively, its rhythm circuit delivers a darker, more muted tone, and its pickups — wide, flat-wound single coils — have a sound that is fatter and more resonant in the low midrange than the Stratocaster’s brighter voice.

For Hansen’s purposes, these are features. The Jazzmaster’s low-mid richness sits naturally in a mix already populated by warm analog synth pads. The floating tremolo, when combined with analog delay, produces a subtle pitch wobble in sustained notes that adds organic movement — a tiny imperfection that makes the sound feel alive in ways that a perfectly stable note would not. The Jazzmaster does not demand virtuosity. It rewards the player who is interested in texture and resonance over technical execution.

The Fender Jaguar

The Jaguar, the Jazzmaster’s shorter-scale sibling, has appeared throughout the Tycho discography particularly in the hands of guitarist Zac Brown. Its 24-inch scale length — shorter than almost any other Fender model — gives it a slightly looser, warmer string tension that emphasizes low-end fullness over high-end clarity. The Jaguar’s built-in rhythm circuit, which rolls off treble and provides a darker, more rounded tone, is especially suited to the kind of subdued, pad-like guitar textures that characterize much of Tycho’s background guitar work. In a mix this dense with reverb and delay, a brighter guitar would feel like an intrusion. The Jaguar’s natural tendency toward darkness makes it a cooperative instrument — one that blends rather than cuts.

The Joe Bonamassa Signature Les Paul (Goldtop)

Perhaps the most unexpected guitar in the Tycho arsenal, and the one Hansen plays most visibly on stage. As documented in the Reverb touring rig video, Hansen favors this Gibson Goldtop for its P-90 pickups — single-coil pickups housed in humbucking-sized covers, known for a distinctive midrange character that sits between the brightness of a standard single coil and the thickness of a true humbucker. P-90s have a gritty, slightly compressed quality in their upper midrange that, when run through the kind of heavy reverb and delay chains Hansen employs, blooms into something synth-like. A note played on a P-90 through a Strymon BigSky set to shimmer does not sound like a guitar note for long. It sounds like a breath.

The Les Paul’s heavier mahogany body and set-neck construction also provide fundamentally different sustain characteristics from the offset Fenders — notes ring out longer and with more midrange weight, which means they survive the journey through multiple delay and reverb stages with more of their energy intact. For live performance, where Hansen needs guitar lines to remain present and legible through a dense electronic mix in a large venue, the Les Paul’s sustain is a practical advantage.

The Fender Telecaster and Stratocaster

Both of these instruments have appeared in Tycho’s studio setups and occasional live configurations. The Telecaster’s characteristic snap and twang — qualities that seem antithetical to Tycho’s aesthetic — become useful precisely because heavy processing transforms them into something unrecognizable. A Telecaster single note, buried under the Diamond CPR-1 compressor, the Chase Bliss Warped Vinyl vibrato, and three or four stages of reverb, does not sound like a country guitar anymore. It sounds like a texture. The Stratocaster’s quack in positions two and four — that hollow, slightly percussive middle-position tone — similarly becomes a source of interest when the attack is compressed into near-nothing and the tail is stretched by reverb into something longer and more diffuse than the original note.


Zac Brown: The Other Guitarist

No discussion of the guitar in Tycho’s music is complete without understanding Zac Brown, who has been Hansen’s primary guitar collaborator since the Dive sessions and who serves as the lead guitarist in the live band. (Brown is a Sacramento-based musician unrelated to the country artist of the same name.)

Brown is, like Hansen, a self-taught player. His formative influences came not from jazz or blues but from punk, new wave, goth, and early indie music — absorbed through his older sister’s tape collection when he was in seventh grade. He found an old nylon-string guitar in his mother’s attic as a teenager and taught himself to play by ear. He did not begin performing or writing seriously until his late twenties.

This background shapes his playing fundamentally. Brown’s attack is physical and direct — the kind of technique that develops when you have not been trained to minimize pick noise, to keep your wrist loose, to approach the strings with the refined efficiency of a classically trained player. That physicality is not a flaw. In the context of Tycho’s productions, it is a contribution. Where Hansen’s self-produced guitar work tends toward the atmospheric and textural — sustained notes that dissolve into effects, chords played once and left to bloom — Brown brings a rhythmic presence and forward momentum that grounds the arrangements.

The contrasts between Hansen’s and Brown’s approaches to the guitar are as important as their commonalities. Hansen plays guitar like a producer who has thought carefully about what a guitar should do in a specific mix. Brown plays guitar like a person who grew up listening to records and discovered what guitars feel like from the inside. Both approaches are necessary. Hansen’s produces the thoughtful textural elements that sit perfectly in the production. Brown’s produces the human energy that makes the music feel performed rather than assembled.

Their collaboration during the Awake sessions demonstrated this dynamic most explicitly. Hansen would bring in fully realized demo arrangements, dense with overdubbed synthesizers and carefully positioned effects. Brown would listen and identify what could be removed. “The difference between Dive and Awake had everything to do with Zac coming in and saying, ‘Listen, man, there’s 20 things going on here — let’s focus on two really good things,’” Hansen told Tape Op. Brown’s editorial function — his instinct for clarity, for what he has described as a “pop sensibility to song structure” — pulled Awake toward its defining quality: directness without oversimplification.


The Pedal Board: A Signal Chain Philosophy, Not a List of Boxes

The word “pedalboard” is technically accurate for what Hansen has assembled, but it undersells the conceptual framework. He does not approach effects pedals as modifiers of a primary guitar sound. He approaches them as a system for transforming one kind of signal into another. The guitar is, in his framework, a sound source — valuable for its particular attack transient and its organic pitch behavior — but not the end product. The end product is whatever emerges from the other side of the chain.

Hansen has publicly called his studio effects setup the “mothership stereo effects rig,” and the name captures the ambition. This is not a collection of tools assembled pragmatically. It is a designed environment in which signals are progressively transformed, widened, warmed, and eventually rendered into something that may bear little acoustic resemblance to the guitar that initiated the process.

The Origin Effects RevivalDRIVE: Where It All Begins

The very first thing a guitar signal encounters in Hansen’s chain is the Origin Effects RevivalDRIVE, and this placement is not incidental. Hansen has described the RevivalDRIVE as “the front end for all his guitar work, whether going into a tube amp or a digital profiler.” The RevivalDRIVE is a sophisticated analog circuit that emulates the complete signal path of a driven tube amplifier — including power amp sag, harmonic distortion, and the “ghost tones” that appear when certain vintage amplifiers are pushed hard.

The critical strategic choice Hansen has made here is to run his amplifier clean and do all of his tone sculpting in the RevivalDRIVE. This means the character of the guitar sound — its warmth, its harmonic complexity, its degree of overdrive — is established before the signal reaches any time-based effects. Reverb and delay are then applied to an already-shaped guitar tone rather than to a raw, uncolored signal. The implications of this are audible in the recordings: the delays and reverbs on a Tycho guitar part carry the warmth of the driven amp sound within them, because that warmth was already present in the signal when the delay captured it.

The Diamond CPR-1 Compressor: Making the Guitar Breathe Like a Synth

Immediately behind the RevivalDRIVE sits the Diamond CPR-1, an optical compressor in pedal format that Hansen uses to begin transforming the guitar’s dynamic behavior. Compression is arguably the single most important element in creating the Tycho guitar sound, and understanding why requires understanding what compression actually does to a guitar note.

When you play a clean guitar note without compression, it has a characteristic envelope: a sharp attack as the pick strikes the string, a brief sustain, and then a decay that follows the natural resonance of the string and body. This is a guitar behaving like a guitar. When you apply heavy compression, you reduce the volume of that initial attack relative to the sustained note that follows, effectively raising the noise floor and the reverb tail into a position of greater prominence relative to the dry signal. The note’s attack becomes less dominant. Its tail becomes more present.

The result is a guitar that behaves less like a guitar and more like a synthesizer. Synthesizers, particularly those with slow attack settings, begin their sound without a sharp transient and sustain evenly over their duration. By compressing the guitar’s attack before it even reaches the time-based effects, Hansen begins the process of erasing the guitar’s physical identity. The pluck becomes almost inaudible. What remains is the sustained tone — which can then be stretched and smeared by delays and reverbs until it is indistinguishable from a pad.

The Strymon Ecosystem

Strymon pedals form the dominant presence in Hansen’s effects world, and the depth of his investment in this single manufacturer tells you something important about how central their particular flavor of digital processing is to the Tycho sound.

The Strymon Deco (x3). Hansen’s ownership of three Deco units is the most striking single data point in his gear collection. The Deco emulates the sonic behavior of two reel-to-reel tape machines running slightly offset from each other — a studio technique that produces flanging, chorus, and the characteristic warmth of magnetic tape saturation. What the Deco offers that digital delays and choruses do not is the specific kind of harmonic compression that comes from recording to tape: a gentle, musical saturation that rolls off extreme high frequencies, emphasizes midrange warmth, and adds a subtle unpredictability to the processed signal. Hansen has called the Deco his favorite guitar pedal of all time. With three in his signal chain — one for guitar, one for synths, one as a general saturation stage — he is able to apply tape-flavored warmth at multiple points, building up the character cumulatively the same way actual tape sessions used to produce their warmth: through repetition and accumulation.

The Strymon TimeLine. The TimeLine is Hansen’s flagship digital delay, handling the more precise, tempo-synced duties where he needs exact repeats. In live contexts, the TimeLine runs synchronized to Ableton Live’s master clock, ensuring that delay trails fall on musically relevant subdivisions of the beat. In the studio, its MIDI integration allows complex multi-tap delay patterns that would otherwise require multiple units.

The Strymon BigSky. The reverb counterpart to the TimeLine, offering algorithms that range from convincing room and hall simulations to the more experimental modes — shimmer, cloud — that have become almost definitively associated with atmospheric guitar music. Hansen moves between algorithms depending on the musical context. A tight spring reverb for a track that needs intimacy; a massive shimmer for a pad-like texture that needs to sustain into infinity.

The Strymon El Capistan. A dedicated tape delay emulation, serving a different role from the TimeLine. Where the TimeLine provides clean, predictable delays, the El Capistan delivers the degradation, warble, and unpredictability of actual magnetic tape. Delay repeats through the El Capistan do not simply get quieter over time — they get older. The tape wobbles slightly. The high frequencies degrade. The repeats eventually dissolve into warm noise rather than fading out cleanly. For guitar leads, this behavior is crucial: the El Capistan’s decaying repeats feel organic in a way that digital delay repeats, however warm their emulation, rarely achieve.

The Strymon Volante. A magnetic drum echo emulator that plays a specific structural role in the mothership rig: it converts the incoming mono signal to stereo, establishing the width that carries through the rest of the chain. A single guitar note enters the Volante as a mono signal; it emerges as a stereo event, with slight timing and level differences between the left and right channels that the brain interprets as spatial width. Every subsequent processor in the chain works on this widened signal, building on the spatial foundation the Volante established.

The Strymon Flint. Combining tremolo and reverb, the Flint introduces rhythmic volume modulation before its own pre-tremolo reverb stage. In the guitar chain, this creates a pulsing, breathing quality in sustained notes — the kind of gentle amplitude modulation that makes a sound feel like it is alive rather than simply present.

The Chase Bliss Collection

Chase Bliss Audio, the Minnesota-based manufacturer known for analog signal paths controlled by digital parameter systems, occupies the second tier of Hansen’s effects setup. The Chase Bliss pedals bring a different flavor from the Strymon units: where Strymon tends toward pristine digital recreation of analog phenomena, Chase Bliss delivers actual analog circuits with digital memory and control. The difference is audible in ways that matter to Hansen’s ear.

Chase Bliss Tonal Recall. Hansen’s preferred analog delay, using a bucket-brigade delay line — actual physical electronics rather than digital emulation — to produce dark, warm, slightly noisy repeats. Bucket-brigade delay chips were the technology behind the great analog delays of the 1970s and 1980s: the Electro-Harmonix Memory Man, the MXR Carbon Copy, the Boss DM-2. Their repeats have a characteristic quality — a slight darkening and a gentle noise floor — that no digital emulation has fully reproduced. The Tonal Recall provides this character with the addition of MIDI recall, allowing Hansen to save exact settings as presets.

Chase Bliss Warped Vinyl. A vibrato and chorus unit that emulates the pitch wobble of a degraded vinyl record or a worn tape machine. When applied subtly to a guitar signal, the Warped Vinyl introduces a barely perceptible pitch instability that makes notes feel organic in the way that naturally slightly-out-of-tune analog synthesizers feel organic — not broken, but alive.

Chase Bliss Thermae. A pitch-shifting analog delay that can generate harmonized repeats that shift in pitch over time, creating ascending or descending echo patterns. For certain melodic lines, the Thermae adds a dimensionality that no standard delay can achieve: the repeats are not simply echoes of what was played, they are harmonic variations.

Chase Bliss Mood. A micro-looper combined with an effects processor, capable of capturing a short snippet of incoming audio and manipulating it through granular, reversed, or pitch-shifted processing in real time. The Mood is one of Hansen’s declared favorites, and its appeal in his context is clear: it allows him to capture guitar fragments and transform them into evolving textures without leaving the guitar signal path.

Electro-Harmonix: The Classics

EHX Deluxe Memory Man. One of the most iconic analog delay units ever made, built around Panasonic MN3005 bucket-brigade delay chips that have been discontinued for decades, making surviving units increasingly scarce and valuable. The Memory Man’s delay repeats have a quality that generations of players have tried to describe precisely and have failed: they are dark, warm, slightly hazy, and they degrade in a way that feels musical rather than mechanical. Hansen uses the Memory Man when he wants delay that is unmistakably analog in character — a different flavor even from the Tonal Recall, with a more pronounced warmth and a slower, more diffuse decay character. The Memory Man’s built-in chorus and vibrato circuits can also modulate the delayed signal, adding an additional layer of movement.

EHX POG. The Polyphonic Octave Generator, which adds sub-octave and upper-octave harmonics to the incoming signal, effectively turning a single guitar note into a chord spanning multiple registers. In the context of Hansen’s signal chain, the POG is placed before the reverb and delay stages, meaning the octave-generated harmonics are processed by every subsequent effect alongside the original signal. The result is a massed, organ-like sound — fundamentally a guitar, but one whose pitch content has been multiplied before processing, so that the reverb and delay generate complex, shimmering harmonic content from what was originally a single note.


The Signal Chain: Guitar to DAW

The complete path of a guitar signal through Hansen’s studio setup follows a logic that rewards tracing in detail, because each stage serves a specific purpose in the larger project of transformation.

Guitar → RevivalDRIVE: The instrument signal hits the RevivalDRIVE, where the basic tone character is established. If Hansen wants a clean, almost undistorted tone, the RevivalDRIVE is set conservatively, adding only a whisper of harmonic richness. If he wants a warmer, more pushed sound, the RevivalDRIVE provides it without the need for a cranked amplifier.

RevivalDRIVE → Diamond CPR-1: The compression stage smooths dynamics and begins to erase the guitar’s attack transient, initiating the process of making it behave more like a sustained instrument.

CPR-1 → Modulation effects (Warped Vinyl, Thermae, Warped Vinyl HiFi): Subtle pitch movement and modulation are introduced before the time-based effects, so that the delay and reverb stages capture a signal that is already gently animated.

Modulation → Delay chain (Memory Man, Tonal Recall, TimeLine, El Capistan, Volante, RE-20): The signal enters the delay chain, which is where its character is most dramatically transformed. Multiple delay units may run in series or in parallel paths, with different delay times, different tonal characters, and different degrees of degradation. The Volante, encountered somewhere in this chain, converts the mono signal to stereo.

Delay chain → Reverb (BigSky, Flint, GFI Specular Tempus): Reverb stages apply spatial depth to the already-delayed signal. Hansen has described stacking reverbs in series — running one reverb into a distortion and filter, then another reverb, then another before the delay — to create dense, complex decay structures that feel less like a single room and more like a large, evolved acoustic space.

Reverb → Strymon Deco(s): Tape saturation is applied after the reverb, adding warmth and harmonic complexity to the entire processed signal. This is unusual — most engineers apply saturation before reverb rather than after — but the result is a processed signal whose reverb tail itself sounds saturated, giving the decay a warmth that persists throughout the entire sonic event.

Deco → Neve preamps → Lynx Aurora → REAPER: The processed signal enters the analog recording chain. The Neve 1076 preamps, which Hansen does not use for transparent amplification but for coloration — pushing signal into the transformer to generate harmonic distortion — add another layer of warmth before the Lynx Aurora converts the analog signal to digital for capture in REAPER.

In the DAW, additional processing follows: amp simulation if not already applied (Amplitube or Guitar Rig 5’s Control Room Pro), post-reverb compression to bring up reverb tails, Pultec-style EQ from PSP NobleQ to restore high-frequency presence, precision EQ from PSP Neon, and console emulation from Waves NLS. The entire in-the-box chain exists to preserve and extend the analog character that was established in the hardware chain rather than to substitute for it.


The Strymon Connection: What These Pedals Actually Contribute

Strymon’s importance to the Tycho sound deserves its own consideration beyond the inventory. The company, based in Thousand Oaks, California, occupies a specific position in the effects market: they make digital pedals that are designed and voiced to feel, behave, and sound as much like their analog or mechanical inspirations as digital technology can manage. Their reverbs have longer, more complex decay structures than most digital reverbs. Their delays have more careful pitch drift and degradation characteristics. Their tape emulations capture not just the sonic character of tape but the behavioral character — the way tape machines speed up and slow down slightly when you change settings, the way the bias affects the frequency response.

For Hansen, whose entire aesthetic is built on the pursuit of analog warmth from digital tools, Strymon pedals occupy the perfect middle position. They give him the reliability, programmability, and consistency of digital hardware with sonic results that lean toward the organic, the warm, and the analog-flavored. The BigSky’s shimmer algorithm, for instance, is a digital construction with no analog equivalent — but it produces a sonic result that Tycho’s guitar tones inhabit naturally, because it is designed to feel expansive and overtone-rich rather than precise and clinical.

The Deco’s tape emulation deserves particular attention in this context. Hansen’s use of three of them — one of which operates as a general-purpose saturation stage that everything passes through on its way to the recorder — reflects an understanding that tape saturation is not an effect applied to a sound but a medium through which sound is passed. Real tape machines did not add a “tape effect” to recordings. They were the recording medium, and everything that happened sonically to a signal recorded to tape was simply a consequence of the physics of oxide-coated magnetic particles on polyester film. The Deco, applied at multiple points in the signal chain, recreates the cumulative effect of those physics: the gentle compression, the harmonic enrichment, the subtle limiting of extreme high frequencies, the overall sense that the sound has been lived in rather than freshly generated.


Guitar Tone Across the Discography

The Early Records (2002–2006): Guitar as Texture

In the earliest Tycho material — The Science of Patterns EP, Sunrise Projector, and Past Is Prologue — guitar is present but not yet a primary voice. Hansen was working primarily from samples, software synthesizers, and electronic loops. When guitar appeared, it was processed beyond recognition, serving as one texture source among many rather than as a melodic lead instrument. The DI recording approach was already in place during this period, with Hansen running guitar direct and using amp simulators. But the limitations of his early signal chain — less hardware, less refined effects, a younger ear — meant the guitar had not yet developed the distinctive character it would acquire over the following decade.

Dive (2011): The Guitar Emerges

Dive is the album where guitar moved from background texture to foreground instrument, and the change was catalyzed by Zac Brown’s arrival. Hansen had decided the project needed more guitar presence, and Brown’s involvement brought a different sensibility — a physicality and directness that contrasted with Hansen’s more processed, texture-oriented approach.

The guitar on Dive has a warmth and roundness that reflects Hansen’s growing investment in analog outboard gear during this period. The Neve 1073-clone preamps, the Empirical Labs Distressors, the Roland Space Echo — all of these contributed to a signal chain that was finally sophisticated enough to produce the quality of guitar sound Hansen had been hearing in his imagination.

“A Walk,” Dive’s opening track, remains the single most significant guitar moment in Tycho’s catalog — not for its technical complexity but for its emotional immediacy and its cultural reach. The guitar figure that opens the track is simple to an extreme: a clean, lightly reverbed line of single notes, played with a tentativeness that suggests a player who is not entirely confident of where his fingers will land. That tentativeness is precisely what makes it work. A more accomplished guitarist would have played the same notes differently — with a more assertive attack, more confident timing, perhaps a slight vibrato at the end of longer notes. Hansen plays them as if discovering the melody as he goes, and the result is a quality of listening-while-playing that translates to the listener as intimacy. The notes feel thought, not rehearsed.

The melody that follows the opening figure — the lead line that arrives on top of pads and kick drum — is carried by what sounds like a synthesizer but behaves with too much harmonic irregularity to be entirely synthetic. This is the Tycho ambiguity established for the first time: the ear cannot fully resolve whether the melodic voice is electronic or acoustic, and that irresolution is part of the listening experience. Hansen has described many Tycho “synth” parts as actually being guitars processed beyond recognition, and “A Walk” is the first major example of this strategy at work.

Awake (2014): The Guitar Gets Confident

The title track “Awake” contains one of the most kinetic guitar moments in Tycho’s catalog — a bass guitar part that Hansen has described recording live and then chopping into individual notes and rearranging on the timeline to create a rigid, sequencer-like foundation. This is the producer’s approach to guitar applied to bass: the instrument is played, and then the performance is treated as raw material to be arranged, not preserved. The result is a bassline that has the accuracy and gridded precision of a programmed sequence but the harmonic character and slight imperfection of a plucked string.

The guitars on Awake sit further forward in the mix than on Dive and have more defined note separation. Hansen’s growing familiarity with the guitar as a compositional tool — and his confidence, developed partly from touring the Dive material — meant the guitar parts were more intentional and less tentative than before. But the fundamental processing philosophy was unchanged. “Many of the ‘synth’ parts aren’t even synths; they’re guitars,” Hansen told Tape Op. “I use so many effects on everything that sometimes the guitars end up sounding indistinguishable from a synth.” The ambiguity had deepened, not resolved.

Epoch (2016): Lead Lines and Rhythmic Guitar

Epoch’s guitar is more assertive than anything that preceded it, reflecting the confidence of a band that had been touring together and developing a shared vocabulary. The album’s rhythmic complexity — driven partly by Rory O’Connor’s drum work but also by guitar parts that lock into specific rhythmic roles rather than floating atmospherically — meant that the guitar had to earn its place in the mix through articulation rather than texture alone.

“Slack” features guitar that drives alongside the drums rather than floating above them. “Division,” built on a 7/8 time signature, has guitar parts that participate in the metric asymmetry rather than simply providing harmonic support. The lead lines on Epoch have a clarity and purpose that is new in the Tycho catalog — Hansen and Brown had internalized the material deeply enough, through two years of touring Awake, that they could write guitar parts that were both melodically distinctive and rhythmically decisive.

The Epoch-era guitar tone was also shaped by an expanded effects arsenal. The Chase Bliss pedals had entered the rotation. The Strymon ecosystem had grown. The signal chain had become more elaborate, but the elaboration served the music rather than overcomplicating it — more stages of transformation meant more control over exactly where the guitar sat in the sonic spectrum.

Weather and Simulcast (2019–2020): Guitar Makes Space

When vocalist Hannah Cottrell — performing as Saint Sinner — joined the project for Weather, the guitar’s role shifted. Vocals occupy the midrange frequencies where guitar naturally lives, and the presence of a singer in the mix required Hansen and Brown to reconsider the guitar’s frequency footprint. The guitars on Weather are pulled back in density and given a softer, less present character than on Epoch, creating room for the vocal to breathe.

Simulcast, the instrumental companion released alongside Weather, restored the guitar to its more expansive role. The two albums together illustrated a fascinating split: the same music heard with and without vocals showed how much of the guitar’s character on Weather had been deliberately muted to serve the song, and how much richer and wider it became when that constraint was removed.

Infinite Health (2024): Return to Electronic Roots

Infinite Health represented a deliberate return to the bedroom electronic production methods of Hansen’s earliest work. The guitars on the album sit within a palette of chopped electronic drums and synthesizer textures that recalls Past Is Prologue more than Epoch. The processing is dense but the guitar parts are spare. This is guitar as seasoning rather than guitar as feature — a choice that reflects Hansen’s evolving sense of what each instrument should contribute at different moments in a project’s life.

Hansen recorded a live bass performance, then chopped it into individual notes on the DAW timeline, rearranging them into the sequencer-precise rhythm that drives the track. The result sounds electronic but breathes like an instrument. It is the clearest single demonstration of how Hansen uses the guitar family as raw material rather than preserved performance.

“Epoch” — The Lead Lines

The lead guitar lines on the title track demonstrate Brown’s and Hansen’s synthesis at its most refined. The notes are melodically simple — no harmonic complexity, no virtuosic runs — but they are placed within the arrangement with a care that makes each one feel inevitable. The Strymon BigSky stretches each note’s tail into a sustained shimmer that the next note emerges from rather than following. The result is a guitar melody that feels continuous rather than sequential, a series of individual events that the reverb connects into something unified.

“Receivers” — Guitar as Pure Texture

On the Epoch track “Receivers,” guitar is used in its most ambient mode: slow chord movements processed through massive reverb and delay until the chordal nature of the playing is almost entirely obscured, leaving only a shimmering, vaguely harmonic field of sound. This is the guitar at the extreme end of Hansen’s processing philosophy — present not as an identifiable instrument but as a raw material whose original character has been completely dissolved by transformation.


How Limited Technique Becomes a Signature

The paradox at the center of Hansen’s guitar playing is that his limitations are inseparable from his voice. A more technically accomplished guitarist would not — could not — produce the same melodic results. Technique implies an education in what notes to play and how to play them. Inexperience implies discovering notes by searching rather than recalling.

Hansen’s melodic vocabulary on guitar has a characteristic quality that trained musicians would describe as naive and that listeners describe as searching, intimate, or genuine. He tends toward stepwise melodic movement rather than leaps. His phrases often feel unresolved in ways that create a gentle forward momentum — the melody seems to be looking for something it has not yet found. His bends are subtle, almost tentative, as if uncertain whether the note should move. These are not qualities a trained player would develop deliberately. They are the natural product of someone who has not been taught which notes to avoid and which bends are canonical.

In this sense, Hansen’s guitar playing occupies the same creative position as the degraded tape sounds and aging synthesizers that define his production aesthetic. Just as he processes synthesizers to make them sound like old memories rather than pristine instruments, his guitar playing sounds like something from the past — not because it is technically regressive, but because it has the unself-conscious simplicity of music that was not made with an audience in mind. It sounds private.

This quality of privacy is one of Tycho’s most distinctive characteristics and one of the hardest to manufacture deliberately. The music sounds like it was made by someone exploring something for himself rather than performing for others, and a significant part of that impression comes from the guitar playing. A studio musician hired to play these parts would not produce the same result. The vulnerability in the notes — the reaching quality, the tentative timing — is not a polished simulation of intimacy. It is actual intimacy, expressed by someone who has not yet learned to hide it.


The Guitar-Synth Interplay

One of the defining structural features of Tycho’s arrangements is the way guitar and synthesizer trade melodic duties without clear demarcation. On most records by bands that use both instruments, the division of labor is explicit: synthesizers provide harmonic background, guitars play melodic lines, or vice versa. In Tycho’s music, this division dissolves.

The reason it dissolves is twofold. First, the processing: guitars processed heavily enough sound like synths, and synths processed through the same effects chain as guitars end up occupying the same sonic space. When everything passes through similar stages of compression, reverb, delay, and tape saturation, the timbral boundaries between instrument categories become porous. Second, the compositional approach: Hansen does not assign melodic versus harmonic roles to guitar and synthesizer by instrument type. He assigns them by what serves the texture at any given moment, which means a guitar might be playing a sustained chord while a synth plays the melody, or a processed guitar might disappear entirely into a bed of synthesizer pads.

This interplay is most audible in the Dive and Awake material, where Hansen has explicitly acknowledged that listeners frequently cannot identify which is which. The Juno-106’s chorus-thickened pads and the Jazzmaster’s processed single notes exist in the same harmonic space, lit by the same reverb, treated by the same compression philosophy. They are not distinguishable by timbre. They are distinguishable only by behavior: the synthesizer sustains evenly, the guitar has a trace of pick attack, a trace of string noise, a trace of the human event that initiated it.

The Shoegaze and Dream Pop Lineage

The guitar processing philosophy that Hansen employs has deep roots in a specific British musical tradition of the late 1980s and early 1990s: shoegaze and dream pop, centered around bands like My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Ride, and Cocteau Twins.

Hansen attended a concert featuring Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine, and Ride in 1995, and the experience — particularly MBV’s physically punishing volume and their technique of burying melodic content beneath layers of detuned, reverb-drenched guitar — permanently altered his perception of what the instrument could be. He described having his ears ring for days afterward. More importantly, he described absorbing a fundamental technique: the practice of making the guitar’s identity ambiguous by layering it until individual instruments dissolve into a singular sonic wash.

The difference between MBV’s approach and Hansen’s is that MBV achieves this dissolution through overdriven feedback and heavily detuned guitars, while Hansen achieves it through meticulous signal processing and effects layering with almost no distortion. Both arrive at the same destination — a guitar that is more than a guitar, a sound that is wider and denser than any single instrument — by different routes.

Slowdive’s contribution to Hansen’s vocabulary is more tonal and less textural than MBV’s. Slowdive’s guitar work — particularly Neil Halstead’s clean, reverb-saturated chord strumming — prioritized harmonic warmth and spatial depth over the aggressive density of MBV’s approach. The languid, sun-bleached quality of records like Souvlaki and Just for a Day established a template for guitar-based atmospheric music that Hansen has explicitly inhabited. The long reverb tails, the clean guitar tones, the melodic restraint — all of these are audible in the Tycho catalog.

The Cocteau Twins’ influence enters through a different door: not the guitar specifically but the treatment of all melodic elements as texture rather than foreground. Elizabeth Fraser’s vocals on Cocteau Twins records are processed to the point where the words become unintelligible, turning the human voice into a timbral element that sits alongside guitars and synthesizers in the mix rather than above them. Hansen applied this same logic to guitar on the early Tycho records: process it enough that it loses its identity as a guitar and becomes simply a warm, melodic texture. On the Dive title track, he embedded subtle female vocals processed in what he described as a “Liz Fraser-esque style” — voice as texture, not narrative — and the guitar work throughout that album follows the same principle.

The more immediate contemporary link is Ulrich Schnauss, the German producer who explicitly merged 1990s shoegaze aesthetics with electronic production. Albums like A Strangely Isolated Place and Far Away Trains Passing By demonstrated to Hansen exactly how to integrate reverb-drenched guitar with clean electronic beats — how to honor the shoegaze tradition without simply recreating it. Schnauss remained one of Hansen’s two most consistently cited influences throughout his career, cited alongside Boards of Canada as defining the twin pillars of the Tycho aesthetic: texture (from Boards) and melody (from Schnauss).


How the Guitar Humanizes the Electronic Production

The word “organic” appears constantly in discussions of Tycho’s music, and it is worth examining precisely what work this word is doing. A production this heavily processed — multiple stages of compression, reverb stacking, tape saturation, digital delay, amp simulation — is the opposite of organic in the literal sense. Nothing about the signal chain is natural. Everything about it is mediated.

What “organic” actually refers to, in this context, is the presence of human imperfections that electronic music production tends to eliminate. The guitar introduces these imperfections at every level of its contribution.

At the level of timing: a guitar player, even one using a click track, does not place every note exactly on the grid. There is micro-variation in the timing of attacks, in the duration of held notes, in the moment at which a chord change occurs. These variations are typically within a few milliseconds — inaudible as errors, but audible as life. They create the sense that a human being is making decisions in real time rather than executing a sequence.

At the level of pitch: a guitar string vibrates at a frequency that is never perfectly stable. String tension changes with temperature. The player’s touch affects intonation. A bend that targets a note above the root may slightly overshoot or undershoot. The Warped Vinyl and other modulation pedals in Hansen’s chain amplify and extend this natural pitch instability into something more pronounced, but they begin from a foundation that is already slightly imperfect.

At the level of tone: a plucked string produces harmonics that change over the course of the note’s duration. The ratio of fundamental to harmonics shifts as the string’s vibration decays. This is an acoustic phenomenon with no electronic equivalent — synthesizers can be programmed to change timbre over time, but they do so through deliberate programming rather than through the physics of vibration. The guitar note’s natural evolution from brighter (more harmonics) at attack to warmer (fewer harmonics) in sustain contributes a sense of organic development that keeps the ear engaged.

All of these imperfections are preserved through Hansen’s signal chain — enhanced, in some cases, by effects that amplify rather than suppress them — and they are ultimately what distinguishes Tycho’s guitar sound from an electronic approximation of the same tones. You could program a synthesizer to approximate “A Walk“‘s opening guitar figure. You cannot program a synthesizer to play it with the tentativeness, the micro-timing, and the natural string decay that Hansen’s version has. The imperfection is the information.


Live Guitar: The Multitasking on Stage

Hansen’s role in the live Tycho band is one of the more demanding performance setups in contemporary touring music. He plays synthesizers, he plays guitar, he manages sequences, and he does it all while maintaining the spatial and visual presence that the live show demands.

The solution the band has developed allows Hansen to switch between synthesis and guitar by design. When he is playing guitar — the Goldtop Les Paul through the Kemper Profiler and his boutique pedalboard — Zac Brown handles the rhythm guitar and bass parts, and the Reaper sessions running on the band’s primary computer provide whatever harmonic background elements would otherwise require Hansen’s hands. When Hansen is behind the synthesizer keyboards, Brown takes the guitar lead.

This division of labor is more complicated in practice than it sounds. The sequences and stems playing through Reaper are not simple backing tracks — they are carefully constructed layers that fill specific harmonic and textural roles, and they must be precisely synchronized with what the live players are doing. The Ableton Live system on the second computer manages the master clock that coordinates everything: the Reaper sessions, the lighting, the visual projections. Hansen has described the challenge of maintaining awareness of all these systems simultaneously while performing music, and his solution is essentially to trust the infrastructure. The computers handle synchronization. The Kempers handle amp tone. The pedals handle effects. Hansen’s job is to play.

The guitar pedalboard that Hansen uses on stage is a subset of the studio mothership rig — the full chain cannot be practically reproduced for touring, both for logistical reasons and because Hansen has described bringing a limited guitar-pedal selection to live shows, noting that almost all the effects heard on stage come via the Apollo interfaces running UAD plug-ins in real time. The hardware pedals on the touring board — the Deluxe Memory Man, the Strymon TimeLine, El Capistan, BigSky, the Chase Bliss units — are the elements whose character is sufficiently distinctive or whose real-time control is sufficiently important that software substitutes would be inadequate. Everything else is replicated in the digital domain.

Zac Brown’s live rig is more traditional than Hansen’s: a Kemper Profiler for amp tone, the Origin Effects Cali76-CB as an always-on compressor, Port City Sahana boosts for rhythm and lead level changes, and the Strymon El Capistan for tape delay. Brown’s role as the rhythm guitarist demands more immediately accessible, hands-on control than Hansen’s more atmospheric approach, and his pedalboard reflects this — simpler, more direct, built for physical performance rather than for textural exploration.


The Kemper Profiler: Digital Amp Modeling as the Bridge

Before Kemper Profilers entered the Tycho live rig, the guitar tone on stage was produced through a combination of software amp modeling — Guitar Rig and Amplitube running on computers — and the unpredictability of touring with tube amplifiers. Hansen has described the earlier approach as problematic: software amp modeling of that era could not fully replicate the dynamic response of a real tube amp, and physical tube amps introduced variables — temperature, humidity, microphone placement, stage volume — that affected the guitar sound in ways that were difficult to control night after night.

The Kemper solved both problems simultaneously. A Kemper Profiling Amplifier uses digital processing to capture not just the frequency response of a real tube amplifier but its dynamic behavior — how it responds to changes in input level, how it breaks up differently depending on pick attack, how the tone shifts as the power tubes are driven harder. By profiling the studio amps in a controlled environment and loading those profiles into the Kempers for touring, Hansen and Brown were able to achieve guitar tones on stage that were functionally identical to the studio recordings.

Hansen has described rebuilding the live show from the ground up around the Kempers. The transition was not simply a gear upgrade — it was a rethinking of how the live guitar sound was achieved. By placing the Kempers at the center of the guitar signal path and running the boutique pedalboard effects before the Kemper’s input, Hansen maintained the character of his hardware effects chain while gaining the reliability and tonal consistency of digital amp modeling. The Kemper does not color the pedal effects — it profiles the specific amp character of the Fender Deluxe Reverb or the Bogner Duende and applies that character cleanly to whatever signal arrives at its input.

For Zac Brown, the Kemper allowed the elimination of physical amplifiers from the stage entirely. No speaker cabinets, no microphones, no stage volume from the guitar amp. The Kemper outputs directly to the front-of-house console, and the only speaker producing guitar sound in the room is the PA system — which Peter Franco at front of house treats with the same analog outboard processing that the rest of the mix receives. This means that the guitar sound the audience hears is consistent regardless of where they are standing in the venue, because it is coming from the PA rather than from a single amp position on stage.


The Guitar as Identity Marker

There is a final question worth addressing, one that returns to the beginning of this discussion: why does the guitar matter so much to Tycho’s identity specifically?

The answer lies in the nature of what Tycho is trying to do. Electronic music that exists entirely within the synthesizer world faces a particular challenge: it communicates in a language that is perceived as technological, constructed, and therefore distant from the listener’s own physical experience. Synthesizers generate sound by electronic means — voltage-controlled oscillators, filters, amplifiers — that have no physical analog in the listener’s body. The sounds they produce can be beautiful, even transcendent, but they do not carry the ghost of a body that made them.

The guitar does. Even buried under fifteen stages of processing, even rendered into something that does not acoustically resemble a guitar, the guitar performance carries a trace of the human event that initiated it — the hand that held the pick, the arm that strummed, the ear that listened and decided which note came next. That trace does not disappear under processing. It persists, inaudible but felt, as the difference between music that seems to have arrived from somewhere and music that seems to have assembled itself.

This is why Hansen’s choice to include guitar in an electronic project, and to play it imperfectly rather than simulate it accurately, is a fundamental identity decision rather than an aesthetic one. The guitar is the place where Tycho’s music declares its human authorship — where the producer steps out from behind the machines and leaves a fingerprint that all the reverb in the world cannot entirely erase.

That fingerprint is the point. It is the thing that makes the music breathe.
