It is also, in the mythology of audio production, the most contested and least understood of the major post-production stages — a dark art where trained ears and expensive equipment conspire to close the distance between what a mix sounds like in one room and what it sounds like everywhere else. For Tycho, the project built by Scott Hansen across more than two decades of increasingly refined electronic production, mastering is not a formality. It is the final act in a process of sound design that begins at the oscillator and ends at the lacquer, and the choices made at that final stage have left their mark on every album in the catalog.

What Mastering Does to Sound Like Tycho

Before tracing the personnel and the album-by-album history, it is useful to consider what mastering actually means for music that sounds the way Tycho’s music sounds.

The Tycho aesthetic is built, at its foundation, from warmth. Analog synthesizers pushed into transformer-based Neve preamps. Guitar signals processed through tape saturation pedals before reaching the converter. Reverb chains stacked two and three units deep, then compressed back up so the tails sustain at the level of the dry signal. Every gain stage in Hansen’s recording philosophy adds something to the sound: harmonic richness, low-midrange body, the subtle thickening that happens when audio passes through physical circuitry rather than software emulation. By the time any Tycho track reaches a mastering engineer, it has passed through more analog processing stages than most modern music ever will.

This creates a mastering paradox. The qualities that make the music sound the way it sounds are also the qualities that make it hardest to master well. Dense warmth in the low-midrange is the character of the Tycho sound; it is also exactly the kind of frequency buildup that mastering engineers are trained to identify and reduce. The reverb tails that sustain at the level of the dry signal give the music its enveloping spatial quality; they also compress the dynamic range in ways that make the conventional mastering task of loudness maximization more complex. The music that arrives at the mastering stage is not neutral raw material waiting to be shaped — it is a fully realized sonic world that has been constructed with tremendous precision, and the mastering engineer’s primary job is to serve that world rather than impose anything external upon it.

What good mastering does for Tycho records specifically falls into several categories.

Frequency coherence. The warm, mid-heavy character of Hansen’s sound sources means individual elements sound beautiful in isolation but can accumulate into a collective muddiness across an album’s full sequence. Mastering provides a final frequency correction — subtle but important — that ensures the low-midrange warmth of individual tracks does not combine into a sonic haze when heard in sequence. This is particularly relevant for Tycho albums, where the same synthesizers, the same effects chains, and the same acoustic environment produce the core sound across every track.

Translational credibility. Hansen builds his music primarily in headphones, with studio monitors as a secondary reference in a treated room. However good the monitoring environment is, it is still a single point of reference. Mastering engineers work with systems calibrated to reveal what a recording will sound like across the full range of consumer playback devices — cheap earbuds, car stereos, club systems, home hi-fi rigs. The mastering stage is where any remaining translational anomalies are corrected, ensuring that the warmth present in the studio does not become muddiness on a television speaker or shrillness on a laptop.

Stereo width and imaging. The Tycho sound depends on stereo width. The Juno-106’s chorus circuit spreads mono synthesizers into a full stereo image. The Strymon Deco’s double-tracking effect creates pseudo-stereo width from mono sources. The reverb chains are mixed in stereo, with tail information distributed across the full width of the image. At the mastering stage, the stereo field can be further enhanced or corrected — ensuring that the width encoded in the mix translates to playback systems ranging from earbuds (where imaging collapses) to large stereo speakers (where problems in the mid-side relationship become audible).

Dynamic range and loudness calibration. This is the most contested dimension of any mastering decision, and for Tycho’s music, it is where the most consequential choices are made. More on this below.


The Early Releases: Monster Lab and the Sacramento Years

The mastering history of the Tycho discography begins in Sacramento, with practical geography rather than aesthetic philosophy dictating the choice of engineer.

The Science of Patterns (2002), Hansen’s debut EP, carries no formal mastering credit. It was a bedroom EP made by a young producer in recovery from a serious injury, recorded entirely on modest equipment and released with minimal post-production infrastructure. The disc was glass-mastered at DADC, a manufacturing facility, but the creative mastering — the sonic finishing — appears to have been performed by Hansen himself within whatever production environment he had available. The result bears the marks of this approach: compressed, slightly murky in the low-midrange, carrying the character of electronic music produced in an untreated room on equipment without wide-bandwidth monitoring capability. But the essential warmth, the compositional instincts, and the sonic priorities that would define the full Tycho catalog are audible in nascent form.

The first time a dedicated mastering professional left a verifiable fingerprint on a Tycho release was Sunrise Projector (2004). The album’s credits list Eric Broyhill and Tim Pratt at Monster Lab Audio as the mastering team — Monster Lab being a Sacramento facility, and the choice reflecting the practical reality that Hansen was still operating from Sacramento, with no extensive industry relationships to draw on for outside services.

Broyhill and Pratt brought what the self-produced early recordings genuinely needed: the professional finishing perspective of trained ears and calibrated monitoring in a dedicated listening environment. Hansen had produced Sunrise Projector on a Korg Triton workstation, building long, atmospheric compositions through sampling and sequencing in a home environment where the monitoring — likely headphones and whatever consumer speakers he had available — would not have revealed how the record translated to outside systems. The Monster Lab session provided that translation check: frequency balancing, level calibration, the assurance that the music would survive playback on systems Hansen had never encountered.

What the Monster Lab mastering did not fundamentally alter was the character of the sound. Broyhill and Pratt were working with material that had an established tonal identity, and the mastering preserved that identity rather than trying to transform it. The warmth was there. The spatial depth was there. The slightly lo-fi character of home-produced electronic music in 2004 was also there, because mastering cannot manufacture production quality that did not exist in the recording.

When Merck Records reissued Sunrise Projector as Past Is Prologue in 2006, Broyhill returned as the sole mastering engineer — maintaining the relationship through the expanded version that added new tracks and remixes. This consistency between the 2004 and 2006 mastering speaks to a practical form of continuity: the same engineer who had calibrated the original recordings to sound their best was now applying the same standards to the expanded release. The new remix contributions from Dusty Brown, Chachi Jones, and Nautilis came to the mastering stage with their own tonal characters, and Broyhill’s job included matching them to the core tracks Hansen had produced. That kind of level-matching across materially different sources is one of the genuine technical challenges of mastering a remix collection.

The Monster Lab relationship established a principle that would persist through the rest of the Tycho discography: mastering is a function that serves the material, and the right mastering engineer is one who understands what the material is trying to do. Monster Lab understood that the Tycho sound was warm, atmospheric, and built from analog sources, and treated it accordingly. That understanding — rather than any particular technical tool or methodology — was the foundation of the working relationship.

Hansen would later acknowledge Monster Lab’s continuing role as a resource for situations where external mastering perspective was genuinely valuable. The facility does not disappear from the story after the early Sacramento years; it remains a resource in the production ecosystem, called upon when specific circumstances create a need for genuinely fresh ears on material that has been built in close isolation.


The Dive Transition: Dave Cooley and the Loudness War

By the time Dive was being finished in 2011, the circumstances of Tycho’s production had changed substantially. Ghostly International had signed Hansen following their reissue of Past Is Prologue in 2010, which meant Dive would have proper independent label infrastructure around it — press, distribution, a marketing budget, the expectation of meeting professional production standards. Dive was also the most ambitious recording Hansen had made by a very wide margin: five years in the making, anchored by vintage synthesizers he had spent years acquiring, produced through a DAW transition mid-project that he described as opening “the floodgates” of his compositional capability.

The mastering for Dive went to Dave Cooley, an engineer with substantial independent music credentials and a Los Angeles base. Cooley brought to the project the professional finishing standards that a Ghostly International album at that level of ambition required, and his work on Dive served a specific function: landing the dense, warm, analog-sourced layering of Hansen’s sound in a mastering context where the record had to compete with the broader electronic music landscape of 2011.

That landscape, in 2011, was still deeply shaped by the loudness wars. The industry-wide push toward maximized RMS levels — driven by radio competition, the loudness perceptions of CD players, and later the equalization of playback levels on early MP3 players — had been intensifying since the mid-1990s and was at or near its most aggressive peak by the time Dive was being mastered. Electronic music in particular was subject to the expectation of high loudness targets: the genre’s prominence in club and streaming contexts meant mastering engineers and labels alike felt pressure to match the perceived volume of competing releases.

For music built around preserved dynamics — as Tycho’s music unambiguously is — this created a fundamental tension. The quiet passages on Dive are genuinely quiet. They are not loud music with the levels pulled down; they are music built from small sounds in spacious reverb environments, and their quietness is structural. The crescendos on tracks like “A Walk” and “Hours” have impact because they arrive from somewhere small. A loudness-maximized master that flattened those dynamics would have destroyed the essential mechanism of the album.

Cooley navigated this tension competently. Dive is not a loudness-war casualty in the way the most compressed records of its era are. The dynamic variation between the album’s quiet, atmospheric sections and its fuller moments is audible and intact. What Cooley delivered was a master that met the professional loudness standards of 2011 electronic music without sacrificing the dynamic architecture that made the music work. The LUFS targets fell in the range considered standard for independent electronic music releases at that time — not the extreme compression of the most aggressive commercial mastering, but competitive enough for streaming and digital retail.

The Dive mastering also established something that would become a recurring feature of the Tycho production story: the mastering engineer’s task was to honor a dynamic range that had been preserved throughout the recording and mixing stages. Hansen’s signal chain philosophy — analog sources, transformer-based preamps responding to input level, optical compression used for tone rather than level control — meant the dynamics were already mostly preserved by the time the music reached the mastering stage. The mastering engineer was not being asked to restore dynamics that had been crushed in the mix. The dynamics were there, and the job was not to lose them.


Count Eldridge and the Architecture of Finishing: Awake Through Simulcast

The most consequential relationship in the Tycho mastering story begins with Mikael Eldridge — known across the electronic music world as Count — and it begins not with mastering but with something more comprehensive: an embedded collaboration that eventually absorbed the mastering stage entirely.

Count is a San Francisco-based engineer and producer who operates Velvet Hammer Mastering. His credits span a generation of significant work with artists including DJ Shadow, Radiohead, New Order, and Blackalicious. His relationship with Hansen began during the Dive sessions, where his role was mixing and engineering consultation. By the time Awake (2014) was being made, Count had become the primary mixing engineer, production consultant, and mastering engineer for the Tycho project — a comprehensive involvement that had no real precedent in the production history of the previous records.

What made the Count relationship distinctive as a mastering arrangement was the depth of his knowledge of the material by the time he applied finishing work to it. Traditional mastering philosophy argues for separation between mixing and mastering: the mastering engineer should have fresh ears, undistorted by months of familiarity with the material’s development. Count’s situation on Awake, Epoch, Weather, and Simulcast was precisely the opposite. He had been inside the sessions. He had made the mixing decisions that established the dynamic architecture. He had been present for the creative choices about what was supposed to be quiet and why, what was supposed to emerge and when, how the album’s arc was meant to move.

This knowledge transformed what mastering meant for Tycho records through the Ghostly and early Mom+Pop eras. Count was not inferring the dynamic intentions of an unfamiliar mix from the audio itself — he was executing on intentions he had helped construct. The quiet passage at the opening of “Awake” was quiet by design; Count knew that, and mastered accordingly. The drum-forward approach of “Montana” was deliberate; the mastering stage would honor the drum prominence rather than flattening it with broadband compression.

The practical consequence was albums that preserved their dynamics through the finishing stage in ways that externally mastered records — even good ones — often do not. A mastering engineer encountering Tycho’s material without prior knowledge of it would face the challenge of distinguishing between intentional dynamic variation (the wide swings between quiet and loud that are the music’s emotional mechanism) and accidental level inconsistency (variations in level that result from production errors and need to be corrected). Count had no ambiguity about which was which. He had made the mix. The mastering was the completion of the mix, not a separate act by a separate intelligence.

Awake: Count’s Mastering Philosophy Applied

Awake (2014) was the first Tycho record where the mixing and mastering were functionally inseparable — where the same informed ear that had shaped the mix had made the final decisions about the record’s level, frequency balance, and stereo presentation.

The album’s sonic signature reflected what the integrated approach could achieve. Awake is the most dynamically alive and spatially open record in the early Tycho catalog — wider, cleaner, and more three-dimensional than either the warm haziness of Dive or the lo-fi intimacy of the earlier releases. The live drums by Rory O’Connor sit with genuine impact in the mix; the synthesizer textures breathe around them rather than competing for the same frequency real estate. The bass lines are defined without being aggressive. Count’s mixing had carved out those spatial separations; his mastering preserved them.

For the physical vinyl format, Awake’s mastering decisions reflected a set of additional constraints that digital mastering does not require. A standard black vinyl pressing of Awake was produced by GZ Digital Media, pressed to 180 grams — a weight specification that in itself affects playback characteristics, providing more mass to reduce vibrations during playing. The vinyl master was cut separately from the digital master, with its own frequency and level adjustments specific to the physical format’s limitations.

Epoch: Analog Summing and Mastering at Maximum Complexity

Epoch (2016) pushed the Count-Hansen collaboration to its technical apex. The album was the densest and most layered production Hansen had made — a darker, heavier record with synthesizer saturation at every turn, complex arrangements built from Rory O’Connor’s pre-recorded drum loop library, and the most intricate stereo field of any Tycho album to that point.

For Epoch, the mixing and summing chain was itself transformed. Count and Hansen introduced the Dangerous Music 2-BUS+ analog summing mixer into the chain — routing stems from Pro Tools through sixteen channels of high-quality analog circuitry before summing to stereo. The Dangerous CONVERT-8 provided the digital-to-analog conversion for monitoring and output. Count was explicit about what the analog summing contributed to the mix: “better punch, better stereo imagery, and a better sense of three-dimensionality” compared to summing entirely within the digital domain.

That three-dimensionality was what made the Epoch mastering task distinctive. The album is dense — more notes per second, more frequency content per track, more harmonic information competing for space — than any previous Tycho record. Mastering dense, analog-summed material requires a different set of decisions than mastering sparse, digitally mixed material. The headroom from the analog summing gave the mastering stage something real to work with: a mix that already had punch and width built in from the analog domain, not manufactured through digital limiting. Count’s mastering could build on that rather than compensating for its absence.

The Grammy nomination for Best Dance/Electronic Album in 2017 validated the approach. A Grammy nomination is a recognition of musical quality, not a mastering endorsement per se — but it is worth noting that the full production chain, from recording through summing through mastering, had to hold up under the scrutiny of Grammy voters and the listening conditions in which nominations are evaluated. The Epoch mastering passed that test.


The Vinyl Mastering Question: Grooves, Geometry, and Compromise

Vinyl is not digital. This is a fact that every record collector knows in an abstract sense, but its specific implications for mastering are less commonly understood, and for a project that has produced multiple vinyl pressings of nearly every album in its catalog, those implications matter.

A vinyl master is prepared from the digital mix by cutting a lacquer disc — a metal disc coated with a soft acetate-like lacquer material — using a lathe with a cutting stylus that carves a physical groove representing the audio signal. The geometry of that groove imposes constraints that have no equivalent in digital mastering:

Bass management. Low-frequency content below approximately 200 Hz must be kept in mono for vinyl. Stereo bass — bass information that differs between the left and right channels — causes the cutting stylus to move excessively and laterally, which can cause groove errors, playback distortion, or in extreme cases a skipping stylus. For Tycho’s music, which relies on wide stereo reverb tails and spatially distributed synthesizer information, the vinyl mastering process requires careful low-frequency management: ensuring that the dominant bass content is centered while preserving the stereo width of mid and high-frequency elements.

Side length. A standard 33 RPM LP side holds approximately 22 to 24 minutes of audio before the inner groove area becomes problematic for playback quality. Longer sides mean a narrower groove pitch, which means the stylus must track more difficult geometry — with greater risk of inner-groove distortion on high-frequency content, and greater sensitivity to tracking force variations. Tycho albums vary in side length, and the vinyl mastering decisions for albums like Dive (a 2xLP running over 50 minutes) and Weather (cut at 45 RPM to allow for higher fidelity on a shorter runtime) reflect these constraints directly.

High-frequency de-emphasis. The RIAA equalization curve applied to vinyl playback means that high frequencies are cut during mastering and boosted during playback. The vinyl master must account for how the RIAA curve will interact with the specific high-frequency content of the material — in Tycho’s case, the shimmer of Juno-106 chorus, the air in the reverb tails, the upper harmonics of guitar processed through amp simulation.

Groove depth and loudness. Louder masters require wider, deeper grooves. Wider grooves consume more physical space on the disc, which limits side length. The relationship between loudness and side length means that vinyl mastering requires a tradeoff between level and runtime that digital mastering does not. A loud, maximized master that would fit comfortably on a single CD side might require two LP sides to accommodate on vinyl.

For Tycho’s vinyl catalog, these constraints have shaped specific production decisions. Weather (2019) was pressed at 45 RPM — a speed that provides higher fidelity than 33 RPM by reducing the speed-related degradation of high-frequency information, but also reduces the available playing time per side. The choice of 45 RPM for Weather reflected a prioritization of audio quality over maximum runtime, made possible by the album’s relatively compact 29-minute length. Dive, at 50 minutes, required the 2xLP format at 33 RPM to accommodate the full program.

The vinyl masters for Tycho records are, where documentation is available, cut as distinct masters from the digital streaming versions — a practice that is industry standard for audiophile-conscious releases but not universally maintained at all price points. The vinyl lacquers for Weather were cut by “KR” at Optimal Media GmbH, as documented in the liner notes — a European cutting facility whose vinyl work has an established reputation in the audiophile community. The pressing was handled by GZ Media, with matrix reference 191221M. The physical pressing quality of the GZ pressings across the Tycho catalog has been generally well-regarded by collectors, with the notable exception of the 2017 Epoch red vinyl pressing, which generated quality control complaints about audible pops and clicks — a reminder that even well-mastered lacquers can produce flawed pressings depending on the manufacturing tolerances of a given pressing run.

The Dive 2xLP, originally pressed in 2011 with matrix X82810 on GZ Digital Media, was noted on its original pressing documentation as mastered at Salt Mastering — a credit that appears on the early vinyl pressing documentation specifically, and may represent a separate lacquer cut prepared specifically for vinyl from the original mastering session. This is a detail that illustrates the complexity of the Tycho physical release history: the digital master and the vinyl master may originate from different sessions, with different target levels and different frequency presentations, even when they ultimately derive from the same mixing session.


The Instrumental Challenge: Mastering Without a Vocal Reference

Every decision in a mastering session is made in reference to something. The mastering engineer listens to the material and makes judgments — this is too loud, this is too dark, the high end needs life, the bass needs control — based on a combination of technical measurement and aesthetic judgment. For music with a lead vocal, the vocal is always the primary reference point. It is the most information-dense element in the mix, the element most sensitive to frequency imbalance, and the element most immediately apparent to a human listener as being correct or incorrect. Mastering engineers calibrate to vocals instinctively; the voice is the reference that makes everything else make sense.

Tycho presents a special case precisely because there is, for most of the catalog, no vocal. The purely instrumental structure that defines the Dive, Awake, Epoch, and Simulcast records — and that returns as the dominant mode on Infinite Health — eliminates the most reliable reference point in the mastering session. Without a voice to calibrate against, the mastering engineer must make judgments based on the internal logic of the music itself.

This is genuinely harder. The frequency balance of an instrumental mix is less immediately legible than the frequency balance of a vocal mix, because the ear has no intuitive model for what a synthesizer pad “should” sound like that is comparable to its intuitive model for what a human voice should sound like. The mastering engineer must develop a sensitivity to the music’s internal reference — understanding that the Juno-106 chorus pad is the high-mid anchor, that the Minimoog bass is the low-end foundation, that the reverb tails are structural rather than atmospheric — and make frequency decisions in relation to those internal references rather than in relation to a vocal’s spectral signature.

Count’s deep familiarity with Hansen’s music across a decade of collaboration gave him a particular advantage in this regard. He had developed, through repeated exposure to the material across recording, mixing, and mastering sessions, a highly calibrated internal model of what a Tycho track should sound like. He was not hearing the music as a new listener trying to construct a reference framework from scratch. He was hearing the material against a sophisticated internal expectation developed over years of engagement with the same sonic world.

This is why the Count collaboration worked so effectively for mastering. The absence of a vocal reference, which would have disadvantaged an engineer encountering the material for the first time, was compensated for by the depth of Count’s accumulated knowledge of the Tycho sound. He knew the reference. He had been building it for years.

When Weather (2019) introduced Hannah Cottrell’s voice into the Tycho catalog across five of its eight tracks, it created a new mastering challenge rather than resolving the old one. The vocal tracks on Weather needed to sit with the kind of presence and definition that lead vocals require — present, immediate, neither buried in the instrumental mix nor isolated on top of it. The three purely instrumental tracks on the album, meanwhile, needed to maintain the spatial character that had defined all of Tycho’s previous work. The mastering session for Weather was therefore a balancing act between two different internal logics: the logic of vocal music and the logic of instrumental music, present within a single album and needing to cohere as a unified listening experience.

Simulcast (2020), the instrumental companion album to Weather, returned entirely to the instrumental mastering challenge — but with the additional complexity that the tracks were understood in relation to the Weather originals. A listener comparing “Easy” on Weather to “Easy” on Simulcast would make a direct comparison between the vocal version and the instrumental version of the same track, and the mastering of Simulcast had to serve both as a standalone record and as a companion document to its predecessor. The level matching, the frequency balance, the stereo presentation — all of these needed to be coherent within Simulcast’s own structure while also making sense in relation to Weather’s sonic signature.


Joe LaPorta at Sterling Sound: Infinite Health and the New Era

The most significant transition in the Tycho mastering story came with Infinite Health (2024). For the first time in the project’s history, the mastering moved away from the established collaborator network — away from Count and Velvet Hammer — to Joe LaPorta at Sterling Sound in New York.

Sterling Sound is one of the most storied mastering facilities in the world. The studio’s history stretches back to the foundational era of record mastering; it has been the site of mastering sessions for artists across virtually every genre and era of contemporary music. LaPorta himself is an industry veteran whose client list spans major label and independent work at the highest professional level.

The choice of LaPorta for Infinite Health reflects several converging factors in the album’s production story. The record was co-produced and mixed by Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear, marking the first time in Tycho’s history that someone other than Count had held the primary mixing role. Taylor’s involvement represented a broader reset of the production team — one that extended logically to the mastering stage. With Taylor handling mixing, the traditional argument for Count’s mastering advantage (his deep knowledge of the material from the mixing sessions) applied to Taylor rather than to Count. But Taylor, working on his first Tycho album as mixer, presumably did not have a decade-long relationship with a specific mastering engineer in the way Count and Hansen did. LaPorta, as an industry-standard mastering engineer at a premier facility, provided the finishing stage that the new team required.

The practical result on Infinite Health is a mastering presentation that reflects the album’s production ambitions — a return to electronic foundations, rhythm-first compositions, and the kind of club-aware sonic aesthetic that the gear-purge and production reset had enabled. The album is the most dynamically forward and rhythmically assertive Tycho release since Epoch, and the mastering at Sterling Sound delivers that assertion without sacrificing the warmth that has always characterized the project’s sound.

The Where You Are EP, released later in 2024 as an addendum to the Infinite Health sessions, continued the Taylor and LaPorta pairing. The EP centered on the full vocal version of “Infinite Health” — featuring Cautious Clay — alongside extended instrumental edits and B-sides. LaPorta’s mastering work across the EP maintained the sonic coherence established on the main album, ensuring that the vocal track and the instrumental material inhabited the same mastered acoustic space.

The liner notes for Infinite Health document LaPorta’s credit specifically, in the same credits block that lists Taylor for mixing. The documentation is precise: mastering by Joe LaPorta at Sterling Sound. For students of the Tycho production history, this credit marks the beginning of a new phase in the mastering story — one that may or may not persist across future records, but that represents a clear break from the Velvet Hammer era.


Streaming Normalization and Its Effect on the Mastering Conversation

The evolution of streaming platforms from optional to dominant has fundamentally changed the terms of the mastering conversation for all music, and for Tycho’s music specifically, it has been a kind of belated vindication.

The dynamic range preservation that has always characterized Tycho’s production philosophy — analog signal chains that respond to input level, mixing decisions that honor quiet passages rather than normalizing them upward — was, during the loudness war era, a commercial disadvantage in streaming contexts. When playback was not normalized, a record with genuine dynamic range would sound quieter than a maximized record at the same loudness setting. The vocal performances on Weather occupy specific frequency ranges — primarily the upper midrange where human voice fundamentals and formants live — that are filled, on Simulcast, by synthesizer lines and guitar phrases created to inhabit that same space. The mastering of Weather had to account for the vocal’s spectral presence, ensuring that the frequency management of the instrumental beds opened space for the voice. The mastering of Simulcast, working from the same instrumental foundation but without the vocal layers, had to present those instrumental elements as fully realized in themselves — not as beds beneath a voice that is absent, but as the complete sonic statement.

Count’s mastering of both records maintained a coherence between them that was presumably part of the brief. A listener moving from Weather to Simulcast, or comparing individual tracks across the two albums, encounters the same basic sonic environment — same warmth, same stereo width, same dynamic relationships — while hearing the specific tonal differences that the presence or absence of the vocal creates. Broyhill at Monster Lab did not try to clean up the lo-fi character of the early releases; he calibrated them professionally and preserved their identity. Cooley on Dive preserved the dynamics that Hansen had built into the recording. Count through the Velvet Hammer years protected the dynamic range that his own mixing had maintained, and brought the finishing work of someone who had built the structure rather than someone encountering it from outside. LaPorta at Sterling Sound brought the international standard of a world-class facility to a record whose production had been thoroughly reset, providing the professional finishing context that the new creative direction required.

The record that emerges from all of these choices — across all of these albums, across twenty-plus years of accumulated production knowledge — is music that sounds like it was made by someone who cared about every stage of the process.
