The early Tycho records were built in bedrooms and converted garages, tracked through modest equipment into whatever DAW he could afford to run, and released with the fingerprints of a single mind on every decision. But the sonic identity those records projected – warm, immersive, technically refined for their era – was achieved in part by knowing when the work required an outside ear. Over the course of a twenty-plus-year discography, the engineers and mastering specialists who touched Hansen’s recordings have not merely polished his music. They have helped define what it sounds like.

This article traces that collaboration history: the early mastering hands who brought Sunrise Projector into focus, the Velvet Hammer Mastering relationship that anchored the Ghostly International years, Chris Taylor’s co-production and mixing role on the most recent record, and the slow-developing philosophy that governs when Hansen keeps the finishing stages in-house versus when he calls someone else in.


The Earliest Releases: Before There Was a System

The Science of Patterns (2002) arrived without any formal mastering credit. The focus at that stage was compositional – Hansen was discovering that he could write complete songs, not engineering finished masters for commercial distribution. The audio bears the marks of that era: it has the compressed, slightly murky character common to electronic music produced on modest equipment in untreated rooms, but it is not without intentionality. Hansen’s instincts for warmth and texture were already present; the tools to realize them fully had not yet arrived.

The first time a dedicated mastering professional left a verifiable fingerprint on a Tycho release was Sunrise Projector (2004). That album’s credits list Eric Broyhill and Tim Pratt at Monster Lab as the mastering team. Monster Lab was a Sacramento-based facility, and the choice was almost certainly geographic – Hansen was still operating from Sacramento at the time, and working with a local house made practical sense. The collaboration was consistent with the self-released, do-what-you-can-with-what’s-nearby approach that characterized the entire early era of the project.

What Broyhill and Pratt brought to Sunrise Projector was coherence. Hansen had produced the record with a Korg Triton workstation at the center, building long-form compositions through layered sampling and sequencing without access to the kind of acoustic monitoring environment that would reveal how the record translated to outside speakers. Mastering served the corrective function it typically serves for self-produced home recordings: leveling, frequency balance, ensuring the music could survive playback on systems the producer had never heard. The result was a record that held together sonically, which at that stage of the project’s development was the primary requirement.

When Merck Records picked up Sunrise Projector and reissued it as Past Is Prologue in 2006, the production details of the mastering credit carried over from the original release. The expanded version added remixes from Dusty Brown, Chachi Jones, Nautilis, and Mux Mool, but the core tracks were the same recordings with the same finishing work. Hansen’s departure from Sacramento for San Francisco in early 2006 closed out the Monster Lab chapter. The next time he would engage a dedicated mastering house, the circumstances would be fundamentally different.


Dave Cooley and the Dive Mastering

Dive (2011) was the album that transformed Tycho from a self-contained bedroom project into something that could reasonably be called a professional recording. Ghostly International had reissued Past Is Prologue in 2010 and signed Hansen for his next album, which meant Dive would have proper label distribution, press support, and the expectation of meeting a higher production standard. The album was Hansen’s most ambitious recording by a wide margin – five years in the making, anchored by vintage synthesizers he had spent years acquiring, and featuring the first guitar contributions from collaborator Zac Brown.

The mastering for Dive went to Dave Cooley, an engineer based in Los Angeles with a substantial resume in independent music. Cooley had done mastering work for a range of artists across the indie and electronic spectrum and brought the professional finishing standards that a Ghostly International release on that level of ambition required. His work on Dive served a specific function: the album was built from dense, warm, analog-sourced layers, and the mastering had to find the ceiling between natural, breathable dynamics and the loudness floor that streaming and physical formats required at the time.

Dive landed in a particular moment of the loudness wars. The record industry’s decade-long push toward maximized RMS levels was at or near its peak by 2011, and the question for any mastering engineer working on music that valued dynamic range – as Tycho’s music unambiguously did – was how to honor the dynamics the artist had preserved without producing a master that sounded thin or quiet compared to competing releases on the same playlists. Cooley’s work on Dive navigated that tension competently. The album is not a loudness-war casualty. Quiet sections retain their quiet character. Climaxes resolve with the full impact the arrangements intended. By the standards of its era, Dive was a dynamically alive record.

The album also represented Hansen’s first extended experience of having the finishing stages of a production handled entirely by someone outside his immediate environment. He had tracked, arranged, and produced everything himself in his San Francisco home studio. The mastering was done elsewhere, by someone he had not collaborated with through the earlier stages of production. That separation would not last long.


Count Enters: Mikael Eldridge and the Architecture of the Tycho Mix

The most consequential relationship in the entire Tycho post-production story begins with Mikael Eldridge – known universally in the electronic music world by his working name, Count – and it begins on Dive, where Count’s role was not mastering but a broader form of engineering collaboration that grew into the central production partnership of Hansen’s career.

Count is a San Francisco-based engineer and producer whose credits span a generation of significant recordings. His resume includes work with DJ Shadow, Radiohead, New Order, and Blackalicious. He operates Velvet Hammer Mastering in San Francisco, a facility that would become the home of the mastering stage for multiple Tycho albums. But his relationship with Hansen is not reducible to mastering. From the Dive era forward, Count functioned as mixer, mastering engineer, acoustic designer, production consultant, and trusted outside ear across multiple albums. He is the closest thing Tycho has had to a consistent production partner from the outside world.

What Count brought to Hansen’s process was a specific kind of listener’s perspective that the producer, by definition, cannot access from inside his own work. Hansen builds music from the inside out – he works in extraordinary depth with individual sounds, stacking layers, applying the long reverb chains and post-reverb compression that create the Tycho spatial character, committing to tonal decisions that reflect weeks or months of intimate work with the same material. By the time any album is ready for mixing, Hansen’s ears have adapted to the material in ways that make it nearly impossible to hear it objectively. Count provided the objective ear.

The mixing relationship took on its most important form beginning with Awake (2014). Hansen has described Count’s approach in terms that illuminate why the partnership worked: Count could take Hansen’s vision and framework and “dial it in and get it perfect.” This is not the language of a producer handing off control. It is the language of an artist who has learned to trust a collaborator’s craft. Hansen set the direction. Count realized it. The distinction mattered because it meant Hansen did not need to step back from the deep immersion that produced the music’s character in order to execute the mixing stage.

For Awake specifically, Count’s mixing task was complicated by the album’s structural evolution from Dive. Awake featured live drums by Rory O’Connor at the forefront of the arrangements, which changed the fundamental challenge of the mix. Where Dive’s density was the density of layered synthesizers and guitar textures that blended into each other, Awake needed separation. The live drums, the guitar work, the bass lines – they had to exist in distinct spatial positions in the mix while still inhabiting the warm, enveloping atmosphere that was the Tycho sound. Count’s approach carved that separation without sacrificing atmosphere. The album is simultaneously the most forward and punchy record in the catalog and the one that most evidently inherited the textural warmth of Dive. That is mixing work, and it is the work Count did.


Acoustic Design as Collaboration: Count and the Studio Renovation

One of the less-discussed aspects of Count’s role in the Tycho production history is his contribution to the physical space where Hansen records. When Hansen undertook a significant renovation of his San Francisco home studio in 2018 – ahead of the Weather recording sessions – it was Count who designed the acoustic treatment.

This is significant in a way that goes beyond the technical. Acoustic treatment is not a neutral technical service. The monitoring environment shapes every decision a producer makes about sound. If a studio has specific frequency anomalies in its room response, the producer compensates for those anomalies unconsciously when mixing, and those compensations show up in the final record. By designing Hansen’s acoustic treatment, Count was ensuring that the room where the music was being composed and recorded would translate accurately to other listening environments – and specifically to Count’s own mixing environment, since both would now be calibrated with consistent sonic reference points.

The effect on the Tycho production process was described by Hansen as transformative. The 2018 renovation eliminated the need to travel to a separate mixing facility. Count would visit Hansen’s studio every few weeks to mix newly created material, allowing production and mixing to develop in tandem rather than sequentially. The boundary between creation and finishing became deliberately blurred. “Now it’s great, I don’t have to travel anywhere to record,” Hansen said after the renovation. “We have a workflow where I don’t even have to leave my house anymore.”

This workflow integration changed what Count’s role meant for the albums that followed. On Weather (2019) and Simulcast (2020), the mixing happened in the same physical space where the recording took place, with acoustic treatment that Count had specified. The coherence between production environment and mixing environment was total. It was as close as a collaborative production relationship can get to a single, unified creative space.


Velvet Hammer Mastering: The House Sound of the Ghostly Era

Count’s mastering work through Velvet Hammer Mastering has touched multiple Tycho albums, and the through-line between them constitutes a house sound for the middle period of Hansen’s discography. The Awake and Epoch records in particular carry a sonic signature at the mastering stage that reflects Count’s intimate knowledge of the material – not a third-party perspective applied to an unfamiliar record, but the finishing work of someone who had been involved in the mixing stage and understood the dynamic decisions embedded in the arrangement.

This is not the conventional workflow for mastering. The traditional argument for hiring a separate mastering engineer – rather than having the mixing engineer master the same record – is the fresh-ears principle: after weeks or months of mixing, even a highly skilled engineer needs distance from the material to make the level and EQ decisions that mastering requires. Count’s relationship to the Tycho albums was deep enough that the standard argument applied with less force. He knew what the quiet passages were supposed to sound like. He knew why the dynamic range had been preserved through the mixing stage. He was not guessing at intent when he made the mastering decisions.

The practical consequence was mastering that served the material’s own values rather than imposing external standards. Tycho records do not sound like they have been run through a limiter set to maximize loudness at the expense of dynamics. They sound like records where someone who cared about the dynamics protected them all the way through the mastering stage. The LUFS targets are not luxuriously wide by any means – these records had to compete in streaming environments where algorithmic normalization and perceived loudness matter commercially – but the headroom that existed in the mix was not squandered in mastering.


Epoch: Analog Summing and the Three-Dimensional Mix

The mixing process for Epoch (2016) represented the most technically ambitious post-production work the project had undertaken to that point, and it introduced equipment and techniques that would become central to the Tycho sound for years afterward.

For Epoch, Count and Hansen made a deliberate decision to move beyond mixing entirely in the digital domain. They incorporated the Dangerous Music 2-BUS+ analog summing mixer into the chain – routing stems from Pro Tools through sixteen channels of analog circuitry before summing to stereo. Count was explicit about why the shift mattered: the analog summing delivered “better punch, better stereo imagery, and a better sense of three-dimensionality” compared to in-the-box summing. For monitoring and digital-to-analog conversion in this chain, they used the Dangerous CONVERT-8, one of the better converters available at the time for preserving the analog character through the conversion stage.

The choice of the Dangerous 2-BUS+ is telling in the context of what Epoch sounds like. The album is the darkest and densest record in the Tycho catalog – heavier synthesizer saturation, more aggressive arrangements, the red-and-black visual palette translated into sonic terms. Dense, layered material benefits from analog summing in ways that open, spare arrangements do not. The summing matrix provided space and three-dimensionality that pure digital summing could not, keeping the densely layered Epoch arrangements from collapsing into each other and losing definition.

The Epoch production cycle also saw the most explicit documentation of Count’s technical approach to the Tycho mixing challenge. In an interview with Sound on Sound, Count described the specific difficulty of working with Hansen’s material: “All the Tycho sounds end up as warm, mid-rangey sounds, which can be a problem when mixing to make a song feel present and cut through.” This is the central mixing challenge of the entire Tycho catalog. The philosophy that generates the sound – analog saturation, post-reverb compression, transformer-based preamps, the cumulative warmth of multiple gain stages – produces material that sounds beautiful in isolation but crowds the same frequency region in the mix. Count’s work on Epoch was the most aggressive application yet of subtractive EQ and spatial arrangement to solve that problem at scale.

Epoch received a Grammy nomination for Best Dance/Electronic Album in 2017. The nomination belonged to the music, but it was also a validation of what the production and mixing team had built together.


The Vocal Mix Problem: Count and Weather

Weather (2019) introduced a technical challenge that none of the previous Tycho albums had encountered: a human voice had to live inside music that had been designed as purely instrumental. The structural challenge this posed for mixing was considerable.

Hansen had produced the album’s eight tracks largely as instrumentals before Hannah Cottrell, performing as Saint Sinner, contributed her vocals. With the exception of “No Stress,” written specifically for her voice, every song on the album was a completed instrumental that Cottrell was then invited to write to and record over. The vocal performances were layered six to twelve tracks deep – separate vocal takes panned at different volumes and processed with different effects to create the dimensional, breathy presence that characterizes the album.

Count’s mixing approach for Weather centered on the problem he articulated directly: “If this is truly vocal music, you can’t hide the vocals.” The dense atmospheric layers that defined the Tycho sound occupied exactly the frequency range where a human voice needed to sit. Creating a pocket for the vocal required aggressive, precise subtractive EQ across the instrumental tracks – carving out space in the midrange without making the synthesizer textures sound hollow or the guitar layers sound thin. The vocal had to pop through a wall of warm, harmonically saturated material that had been designed, over fifteen years of production, to fill every available frequency register.

The result on the album is a vocal that is simultaneously present and embedded. Cottrell’s voice does not sound isolated on top of the music. It sounds like it belongs to the same space. That quality is a mixing achievement as much as a performance achievement – the EQ carving was deep enough to create presence without being noticeable as carving.

Weather received a Grammy nomination for Best Dance/Electronic Album in 2020, Tycho’s second such nomination.


Hansen’s Own Mixing: The Evolution of Self-Sufficiency

Beneath the collaborator story runs a parallel narrative about Hansen’s own development as a mixing engineer. He has always done most of the pre-mixing production work himself – balancing levels, setting up spatial relationships within REAPER, making the EQ and compression decisions that define the sound before Count ever sees the session. But over the course of the discography, the line between what Hansen handles himself and what he delegates has shifted in meaningful ways.

On the early releases, Hansen mixed entirely in-house by default. There was no outside mixing engineer available or financially accessible. The mix on The Science of Patterns and Sunrise Projector was whatever Hansen had built by himself in a room with headphones. This was not a philosophical choice so much as a practical reality: he was a self-taught producer with no professional infrastructure around him.

By the time of Dive, Count had entered the picture as a mixing collaborator, but Hansen’s own mixing instincts had also grown substantially. His decade of production experience – working every day in headphones, developing the signal chain philosophy, learning the behavior of his specific equipment – had given him a level of technical competence that allowed the collaboration with Count to function as a genuine partnership rather than a hand-off. Hansen was not delivering rough mixes to Count for rescue. He was delivering developed, intentional productions that Count refined and realized at a professional standard.

The organic development of that relationship over the Awake, Epoch, and Weather albums produced something increasingly rare in contemporary music production: a producer who is himself a sophisticated mixing engineer working alongside a dedicated mixer who knows his material intimately. Hansen does not describe himself as a world-class mixer in the way Count is a world-class mixer. But he can hear the difference between a mix that serves the music and one that does not, and his taste governs every decision Count makes. The hierarchy is clear – Hansen’s aesthetic calls the shots – but the execution is collaborative.

The 2018 studio renovation, with its Count-designed acoustic treatment, further blurred the line between Hansen’s production work and the mixing stage. When the monitoring environment is calibrated to the same standard as the mixing engineer’s room, the producer’s reference decisions and the mixer’s reference decisions converge. Hansen began making mixing-quality decisions earlier in the process because his room was finally giving him mixing-quality information. This is not a trivial change. It means the sessions arriving at Count’s mixing stage are already more realized and more precisely balanced than they would have been from an acoustically deficient room.


The Philosophy of When to Bring in Outside Ears

Hansen has been thoughtful and specific about articulating when outside engineering intervention adds value and when it does not. His position is not dogmatic – he does not maintain that external mastering is unnecessary, nor does he treat it as an industry convention to be followed without question. The answer depends on the material, the circumstances, and the state of his own hearing after months of work on the same project.

The argument he has made in interviews for keeping finishing stages in-house is rooted in knowledge. If the artist and the mixing engineer know their monitoring environment intimately – know its specific response, know what their speakers do and do not reveal, know how their room translates to outside playback systems – then the mastering stage can be integrated into the collaborative mixing process rather than separated from it. The key variable is not who does the mastering. It is whether the person doing the mastering understands the dynamic intentions embedded in the mix.

When Count masters a Tycho record after mixing it, he is working with full knowledge of those intentions. He knows which passages are supposed to be quiet and why. He knows where the dynamic arc of the album is meant to peak. He is not inferring these things from the audio. He built the mix with those structures in his hands. External mastering, in this scenario, risks applying a solution to a problem that does not exist – pushing the dynamic range in directions the mix was explicitly designed to avoid.

The counter-argument Hansen acknowledges is the limitation of familiarity. He has been candid about the psychological toll of extended production: after months of intimate work with the same material, a producer’s ears adapt. Details that would be immediately obvious to a fresh listener become invisible. The mix that sounds balanced after four months of work may have developed gradual frequency biases the producer can no longer perceive. For material that is particularly dense or particularly long in development, an external perspective provides what internal familiarity cannot: genuine surprise at what the material actually sounds like.

This is why Eric Broyhill at Monster Lab remains in the story beyond the early Sunrise Projector era. Hansen’s explicit acknowledgment of Monster Lab as a resource for situations where fresh ears are genuinely needed reflects a nuanced understanding of the production process. External mastering is not a fallback. It is a tool with specific appropriate applications.

The working principle that emerges across the discography is something like this: when the collaborative production and mixing process is deep and continuous – when Count has been inside the sessions, when the acoustic environment is calibrated, when the mix decisions were made in full knowledge of the material’s arc – mastering through Velvet Hammer represents the most coherent path. When circumstances create a distance between the mixing and finishing stages, or when the material has been produced under conditions that create familiarity fatigue, external mastering provides the reset the music needs.


Chris Taylor and the Infinite Health Shift

The most recent chapter in the Tycho collaborator story introduces a new name at a level that none of the previous collaborators had occupied. For Infinite Health (2024), Scott Hansen brought in Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear as co-producer and mixer. It was the first time in the history of the Tycho project that someone other than Hansen had shared a co-production credit on a Tycho album.

Chris Taylor is a significant figure in independent music production. His work with Grizzly Bear – particularly on Veckatimest (2009) and Shields (2012) – established him as one of the most thoughtful and technically accomplished producer-engineers working in the space where indie rock and electronic music overlap. He understands dense layering. He understands the relationship between analog warmth and digital precision. He understands music made by people who think as much about sound design as they do about song structure.

The decision to bring Taylor in reflected a specific creative need. Hansen had sold nearly 100 pieces of studio equipment in September 2023, clearing out a collection accumulated over 25 years, valued at over $160,000. The gear purge was both pragmatic and philosophical – the hardware had been “rotting away” unused, and Hansen wanted the fresh energy of new approaches rather than the comfort of familiar machines. The Infinite Health sessions were being built from electronic foundations, beats and breaks driving the composition before any guitars or organic elements were introduced. It was a return to bedroom electronic methodology applied with two decades of accumulated craft.

For that approach to work at a professional output level, Taylor’s outside perspective was valuable in the same way Count’s perspective had been valuable across the previous decade – but different. Where Count’s contribution had always been rooted in an intimate knowledge of the Tycho aesthetic developed over years of close collaboration, Taylor brought something more discontinuous: a genuinely different set of ears that had not adapted to Hansen’s sound through years of exposure. Taylor’s mixing on Infinite Health reflects that freshness. The record sounds like Tycho – the warmth is there, the spatial depth is there, the signature synth textures are there – but there is an openness to the mix that reflects a mixer who was not laboring under the weight of prior expectations about what a Tycho mix should do.

The co-production credit signals something more than mixing. Taylor was involved in the creative decisions of the album, not merely in its technical realization. How extensively that involvement shaped the arrangements, the instrumentation choices, and the production philosophy is not fully documented in Hansen’s interviews, but the credit itself is historically meaningful: it is the moment when the Tycho production model, which had been premised on Hansen as sole creative authority with technical collaborators around him, formally acknowledged an outside creative voice in the production stage itself.


Monitoring Setup and Its Role in the Finishing Stages

The physical listening environment at each stage of a Tycho album’s production history has shaped the decisions made at every subsequent stage, including mixing and mastering. Understanding the monitoring setup at different points in the career illuminates why the post-production choices took the forms they did.

In the earliest years – the Sacramento bedroom and garage studio – Hansen had no proper monitoring at all. He worked on headphones exclusively, driven by practical necessity: he had roommates, no acoustic treatment, and no budget for studio monitors. This was not without consequence for the music. Productions built on headphones develop a spatial character different from those built on speakers. Headphone mixes tend toward detail and inner depth rather than projection and width. The early Tycho records have exactly this quality: they reward intimate, close listening in ways that suggest they were conceived for that kind of attention.

The early San Francisco period introduced studio monitors gradually. The MOTU 828mk2 audio interface he used during the Sonar years had adequate monitor outputs, and Hansen added speakers to his setup, but acoustic treatment remained rudimentary. His primary mixing reference through this period was still headphones – the Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 80-ohm model that he used for years as his studio standard. The DT770 is a closed-back headphone, primarily designed for tracking rather than mixing, with a slightly hyped low-mid response. Mixes built primarily on the DT770 will tend toward warmth in the low-midrange, which is consistent with the sonic character of the Dive-era Tycho productions.

The move to the Audeze LCD-X represented a significant upgrade in headphone monitoring capability. Hansen described the LCD-X as “the first headphones I’ve found with the accuracy, low frequency response and soundstage to truly replace a studio monitoring environment.” This is high praise from someone who had been producing on headphones for over a decade. The LCD-X’s planar magnetic driver provides a more accurate low-frequency response and a more open soundstage than the DT770, which would have changed the mixing decisions made at the headphone reference stage.

The studio monitors evolved alongside the headphones. Genelec 8330A monitors served as the primary speaker reference for several years before Hansen upgraded to the Genelec 8341 reference monitors with a Genelec 7360 subwoofer – a more accurate and full-frequency system that provided a better foundation for the mixing decisions Count was making in collaboration with the room. The 8341 is a co-axial design, meaning the tweeter and midrange driver share the same acoustic center, which provides a more accurate and coherent high-frequency response at a wider range of listening positions.

The 2018 renovation and Count’s acoustic treatment design brought the San Francisco home studio to a point where the room response was calibrated, the monitoring chain was professional-grade, and the decisions made in that room translated reliably to outside listening environments. This was the monitoring setup that served Weather and Simulcast, and it represented the highest level of acoustic accuracy that any Tycho recording had been made in to that point.

The move to Oakland in the early 2020s involved transporting and reinstalling the acoustic treatment from the San Francisco studio – Hansen was not willing to lose the acoustic environment that had been designed and calibrated for his specific monitoring chain. The Oakland studio carries the same acoustic signature as the San Francisco studio, not because the rooms are physically identical but because the treatment was designed and specified by the same engineer for the same monitoring system.


Loudness, Dynamics, and the Tycho Mastering Philosophy

The loudness wars era – roughly 2000 to 2015, with a gradual relaxation as streaming normalized LUFS targets and algorithmic loudness normalization became standard – put every mastering engineer and every artist who cared about dynamics in a difficult position. Maximizing loudness meant sacrificing dynamic range. Preserving dynamic range meant sounding quiet by comparison to competitors on the same playlists and radio formats. The compromise any given mastering chain reached was a statement about priorities.

Tycho records made during this period are instructive case studies because Hansen’s production philosophy was explicitly built around preserving dynamics. The cumulative analog processing – transformer-based preamps, tape saturation, optical and FET compression used as tone-shaping tools rather than level-control tools – maintained the relationship between loud and soft throughout the signal chain. Each gain stage responded to input level in ways that preserved dynamic variation rather than eliminating it. By the time a Tycho album reached the mastering stage, its dynamic range was substantially intact.

The mastering approach on Dive, handled by Dave Cooley, reflects a specific moment in the loudness wars where the expectations for electronic music were still fairly aggressive. The album is not loud by loudness-war standards – it does not have the brick-walled, overly compressed character of the most egregious records of that era – but it is not as dynamically open as the Awake and Epoch records that followed. The LUFS target sits in the range that was considered standard for electronic music releases in 2011.

By Awake (2014), with Count handling both mixing and mastering through Velvet Hammer, the dynamic approach became more intentional and more protected. Count understood the mix because he had built it, and he understood that the dynamic variation between the quiet synth passages and the full-band climaxes was the album’s primary emotional mechanism. Mastering that crushed the quiet passages would have eliminated the contrast on which the crescendos depended. The Awake mastering preserved those contrasts.

Epoch (2016) represents the fullest development of this approach in the pre-streaming era. The album is the densest and most complex production Hansen had made, and the mastering reflected the challenges of that complexity. Analog summing through the Dangerous 2-BUS+ had provided the three-dimensionality and punch at the mixing stage. The mastering stage’s job was to preserve what the analog summing had delivered rather than to compensate for deficiencies in the mix. The Grammy nomination for Best Dance/Electronic Album was, among other things, recognition that the full production chain – from recording through summing through mastering – had worked at a high level.

The post-Weather era, with streaming loudness normalization having settled into a de facto standard around -14 LUFS across major platforms, changed the mastering calculus for all music. The algorithmic normalization that Spotify, Apple Music, and other major platforms apply means that extremely loud masters are turned down to match quieter masters in playback level. The practical incentive to maximize loudness in mastering has diminished substantially. For an artist like Tycho, whose production philosophy had always prioritized dynamics over loudness, the normalization era was a validation: the mastering decisions that had preserved dynamic range throughout the Ghostly and Mom+Pop/Ninja Tune eras now translated into streaming contexts without competitive disadvantage.


The Collaborator Relationship as Creative Tool

What the full arc of Tycho’s post-production collaborations reveals is something more subtle than a list of who did what album. It reveals a producer learning, over the course of two decades, how to use outside expertise as a creative resource rather than a technical service.

The early Broyhill and Pratt mastering on Sunrise Projector was technical service in its purest form – Hansen needed his record to meet a professional standard he could not achieve alone, and Monster Lab delivered that. Dave Cooley’s mastering on Dive was a step up in professional engagement, but still substantially sequential: Hansen produced and recorded, someone else mastered, the album came out.

Count’s integration into the Tycho production process, beginning on Dive and deepening through every subsequent album, represents something categorically different. The relationship evolved from external finishing to embedded collaboration: Count designing the acoustic treatment for Hansen’s studio, Count mixing iteratively as tracks were produced rather than after the album was finished, Count’s mastering reflecting full knowledge of the mix’s intentions rather than guesswork. The finishing stages became inseparable from the production stages. The collaborator became part of the room.

Chris Taylor’s arrival on Infinite Health suggests that Hansen’s understanding of productive collaboration has continued to evolve. Taylor was not brought in to perform a specific technical function – mixing, mastering, acoustic design. He was brought in as a co-creative voice at the production stage. That is a different kind of collaboration, one that requires a level of trust and aesthetic alignment that Hansen spent years building with Count and that he apparently found, more quickly, with Taylor.

The through-line in all of these relationships is Hansen’s consistent ability to identify what he needs and to find collaborators who can provide it without compromising the core of what Tycho sounds like. The engineers and mixers who have worked on these records have not imposed themselves on the music. They have served it. That is not an accident. It reflects choices Hansen has made, repeatedly and deliberately, about what good collaboration looks like.
