Scott Hansen built Tycho’s sound the way a photographer builds a darkroom: one instrument at a time, each addition a deliberate choice, every acquisition shaped by an understanding of what the collection was missing. Over more than twenty-five years, the synthesizers that passed through his studio tell the story of the project itself — from the Roland MC-303 that sparked a Sacramento teenager’s obsession to the Softube Model 84 plugin that inspired the title track of a Grammy-era album. The collection has been built up, torn down, rebuilt, and radically reconceived more than once. What has remained constant is the goal: to find instruments that make warm, organic, emotionally legible sounds in response to human hands and human intentions.
This article traces every synthesizer known to have occupied a meaningful role in Tycho’s history, organized by era, with attention to the specific qualities Hansen sought in each instrument, the patches and techniques that made them central to the recordings, and the logic of how the collection evolved across seven studio albums.
The Beginning: Workstations and Samplers (1999–2006)
Roland MC-303
The Tycho synthesizer story begins improbably with a house-cleaning job. A friend of Hansen’s who had introduced him to drum and bass music cleaned someone’s house and came away with an Alesis drum machine and sequencer. Hansen brought these to a Sacramento music store and traded them for a Roland MC-303 — the much-maligned “Groovebox” that Roland had released in 1996 to reliably middling reviews.
The MC-303 was never a sophisticated instrument. It was a preset-based dance machine designed to get beginners making beats quickly, and the synthesizer community treated it accordingly. But for Hansen, at that point a computer science student at the University of San Francisco with no formal musical training, it was the spark. He has described it as getting him “stoked” about electronic music — the first object that made the abstract idea of producing music feel tangible and personal.
No Tycho release carries the MC-303 in any meaningful way. Its importance is entirely catalytic: it established a pattern that would define Hansen’s relationship with gear for decades. Start with whatever you have, let the instrument’s limitations push you somewhere unexpected, and trust that the constraints themselves will generate something worth keeping.
Ensoniq ASR-X Pro
If the MC-303 was the spark, the Ensoniq ASR-X Pro was the breakthrough. Hansen has described his early gear progression as moving from drum machines and small synths up to the ASR-X Pro, a sampler and drum machine hybrid that Ensoniq released in the late 1990s and that was favored by hip-hop producers for its sampling capabilities and flexible effects processing.
What the ASR-X Pro gave Hansen was the ability to record into the machine itself — to sample his own sounds, manipulate them, layer them, and sequence them into compositions. This was the fundamental creative leap: from experimenting with gear to actually making music. The ASR-X Pro’s resampling workflow — capturing a sound, processing it, sampling the processed result, processing that again — became a foundational technique that echoes through every Tycho record, even long after the hardware was retired. The gritty, lo-fi character of its converters contributed to the hazy, sun-bleached aesthetic that defined early Tycho.
Korg Triton
The Korg Triton workstation was Hansen’s first real synthesizer — the instrument that moved him beyond sampling and drum programming into keyboard-based composition. A powerhouse of late-1990s digital synthesis, the Triton combined a sample-based sound engine with sequencing, effects processing, and an enormous library of sounds.
The Triton became the backbone of The Science of Patterns (2002) and the material that would eventually become Past Is Prologue (2006). Hansen used a computer in only a limited capacity during this period; the Triton’s internal sequencer and sampling capabilities allowed him to build entire compositions within the workstation itself. The lush, slightly artificial pads and string textures that characterize Past Is Prologue — the shimmering layers that feel simultaneously digital and warm — owe much to the Triton’s character.
The Triton taught Hansen how to compose with a keyboard and how to think about layered synthesizer textures as the primary sonic architecture of a piece. But it was a digital instrument in every sense, and the gap between what it offered and the warm, organic qualities Hansen was discovering in his influences became increasingly audible to him. The Triton pointed toward the next step without being able to take it.
The Analog Awakening: Dive Era (2005–2011)
Korg Mono/Poly
The Korg Mono/Poly was the instrument that changed everything. Hansen has told the story in multiple variations: when he got his hands on a Mono/Poly, that was when he understood what everyone had been talking about with analog synthesis. The difference between the Triton’s digital patches and the Mono/Poly’s raw, oscillating waveforms was not subtle.
Hansen has described the Mono/Poly as “the Japanese answer to the Minimoog” — a cheaper alternative that Korg built in the early 1980s that ended up becoming “a whole new beast.” The Mono/Poly’s character is distinctive: four oscillators that can operate in monophonic or polyphonic modes, with a warmth and grit that sits somewhere between the Minimoog’s fatness and the brighter, more angular sound of other Japanese synths of the era. Hansen has characterized its tone as “more disco-y, like electronic, ’70s dance.”
The Mono/Poly is probably the synthesizer heard most on Dive (2011). Its four oscillators could be stacked for thick mono leads or spread into a rough four-voice chord, and its filter had a character that rewarded aggressive playing — the kind of physical, expressive engagement with an instrument that Hansen had been seeking since the Triton. In a revealing admission about his attachment to the instrument, Hansen has said he would take only two synths if he could bring just a few: the Mono/Poly and the Access Virus Indigo.
For live performance, rather than risk the vintage hardware on tour, Hansen sampled the Mono/Poly into Native Instruments Kontakt patches. This meticulous multi-sampling approach — every key recorded at multiple velocity layers to capture the instrument’s non-linearities — allowed him to carry the Mono/Poly’s voice to stages around the world without the fragility and tuning instability of the hardware.
Korg MS-20
Hansen acquired the original Korg MS-20 and initially used it sparingly, describing it in interviews around the time of Epoch as a recent acquisition he had used on only one song but was excited to develop further. He called it a “late bloomer” in his studio.
The MS-20’s semi-modular patchbay and aggressive filter character make it a very different animal from the warm, enveloping sounds Hansen typically gravitates toward. It is a gnarly, sometimes unruly instrument — the kind that rewards experimentation with unexpected results. In a notable reversal, Hansen used the MS-20 plugin rather than the hardware for the lead sound on the title track “Dive,” later acknowledging he had the real MS-20 sitting across the room but the plugin had a different sound that served that particular composition. The MS-20 episode is an early example of Hansen’s lifelong pragmatism: the right sound is whatever serves the music, regardless of whether it comes from an authentic piece of hardware or a software approximation.
Korg Trident
Hansen bought his Korg Trident because of Boards of Canada. He has acknowledged this directly: he sought out the Trident after learning that his defining musical influence — the Scottish duo behind Music Has the Right to Children and Geogaddi — had reportedly used one. Boards of Canada’s influence on Tycho cannot be overstated. Hansen has credited them with showing “there’s a different way of going about electronic music production that doesn’t involve so much of the dance or the electronic element.”
The Trident is a peculiar instrument — a string/brass/polysynth hybrid from 1980 that layers three distinct synthesis sections. Its wobbly vibrato and slightly unstable character gave it a quality that felt lived-in, like a recording transferred between tapes too many times. Hansen used the Trident on material from the Dive and Awake eras. When it appeared in the 2023 Reverb sale, the listing catalogued multiple cosmetic issues — veneer damage, missing screws, a scratchy output jack — the accumulated evidence of years of actual use.
Korg Polysix
The Korg Polysix contributed its distinctive chorus-laden pad sounds to the Tycho palette. Notably, the “Awake 2nd lead” was tracked using the Korg Polysix legacy plugin rather than the hardware, indicating that Hansen moved fluidly between physical instrument and software emulation even during the era most associated with hardware synthesis. Hansen’s hardware Polysix was listed in the 2023 Reverb sale with a blunt caveat: it did not currently power up and would require repairs to function.
Oberheim Four Voice FVS-1
Of all the synthesizers Hansen has owned, the Oberheim Four Voice may be the most storied. This massive, unpredictable machine — built by Tom Oberheim in the mid-1970s as one of the first polyphonic synthesizers — became a defining instrument of the Dive era and remained in Hansen’s studio through Awake and Epoch.
Hansen described the FVS-1 in terms that bordered on the mystical: it was a “magic synth” that had “a mind of its own,” one that would “lead you down these paths you never knew you wanted to go down.” This was not merely poetic license. The Four Voice is built from four individual SEM (Synthesizer Expander Module) voices, each with its own oscillators, filter, and envelope generators. Unlike modern polysynths where every voice is identical, each SEM in the Four Voice has its own character, its own tuning drift, its own subtle personality. The result is an instrument that never plays the same sound exactly the same way twice.
Hansen used the Oberheim Four Voice for pads, atmospheres, basses, and leads across three albums. On Dive, it provided the massive, oceanic textures that defined the record’s sound. On Awake, he shifted it toward basses and leads. By Epoch, he had circled back to pad territory. Its thick, wooly tone and unpredictable behavior gave those records a dimension that no plugin of the era could replicate.
In September 2023, Hansen listed the FVS-1 (serial number 0515) on Reverb as the most expensive single item in his massive studio sale, at approximately $30,000. He described it as being in “really great shape overall” with all functions working. After selling it, he moved to a plugin emulation of the Oberheim Four Voice — a decision that speaks to both his evolving philosophy about hardware and his willingness to let go of even the most iconic instruments when they are no longer serving the work.
The Minimoog and Its Orbit (2007–2023)
Minimoog Model D (1972 Original)
If there is one instrument that defines Tycho, it is the Minimoog Model D. Hansen owns an all-original 1972 unit — one of the earliest production Minimoogs — and it has been the most-used synthesizer across his entire catalog. In the 2023 Reverb studio tour video, the Minimoog occupied the most prominent position in Hansen’s studio, sitting atop a set of vintage Neve modules.
Hansen’s description of the Minimoog is unequivocal: “It’s the closest thing I’ve ever found to a guitar in a synthesizer.” He has elaborated on this comparison in multiple interviews. The Minimoog is so responsive that when he sits down to play it, “things just flow.” With newer synthesizers, “it’s harder just because for whatever reason it takes longer to get into a space where I feel inspired by the sound.” The Minimoog collapses the distance between intention and expression.
Despite being a monophonic instrument, the Minimoog became Hansen’s primary compositional tool. His method: “I’m always creating chords out of mono synths, like the Minimoog. I’ll play a note and then layer it and layer it.” This layering technique — building polyphonic textures from stacked single-note takes — is one of Tycho’s signature production approaches. Each layer carries the Minimoog’s natural warmth and slight variation in tuning, creating a chorus effect that is fundamentally different from what a polyphonic synth produces. The result is a living, breathing chord that sounds like many instruments rather than one instrument playing many notes.
Hansen has called his 1972 Minimoog “the most inspirational” synthesizer he has ever owned. When Moog released its reissue Model D, he immediately acquired one for touring, solving the longstanding problem of wanting the Minimoog sound on stage without risking the irreplaceable original. Before the reissue, he had relied on Native Instruments’ Monark plugin for live shows, calling it “really close to the real thing” and noting it was “almost indiscernible from a real Mini for some sounds.”
In a revealing development, Hansen has acknowledged that for studio work, he now finds himself reaching for Universal Audio’s Minimoog emulation more than the hardware unit itself. The plugin’s recall-ability and workflow flexibility have, for practical purposes, superseded the hardware in the production environment. But the original stays in the studio permanently. “No, absolutely not. I don’t care if I never use it again. It’s too sentimental.” Some instruments transcend utility.
The Minimoog was not sold in the 2023 Reverb sale. It is the one instrument Hansen will never part with.
Moog Prodigy
The Moog Prodigy is a simpler, more aggressive sibling to the Minimoog — a two-oscillator monosynth released in 1979. Hansen has identified the Prodigy as a staple of the Tycho sound alongside the Minimoog and the Matriarch. Its character is rawer and more forward than the Minimoog’s lush warmth, giving Hansen access to a different shade of Moog when a track calls for more bite or edge — a punchy bass line or a cutting lead without the Minimoog’s more elaborate architecture.
The Prodigy was retained after the 2023 Reverb sale, one of the few vintage instruments that made the cut.
Moog Voyager
The Moog Voyager — Bob Moog’s 21st-century reimagining of the Minimoog architecture — appeared in Hansen’s studio during the Dive and Awake eras. It retained the essential Moog character while adding MIDI, patch storage, and a touch-sensitive performance surface. The Voyager was sold in the 2023 Reverb sale as part of Hansen’s broader studio clearout. Its departure, alongside the Oberheim and the Prophet-5, signaled that the sale was genuine: even beloved instruments were not spared.
Moog Sub 37 / Subsequent 37
The Moog Sub 37 (and its revised iteration, the Subsequent 37) is a two-oscillator duophonic monosynth that sits in the Moog family between the compact Minitaur and the full-scale Minimoog. In the warm synthesis palette that defines Tycho’s middle and later periods, the Sub 37 occupies a specific functional role alongside the Matriarch: providing Moog ladder filter warmth in a more modern, stable, MIDI-friendly package than vintage hardware. Its paraphonic capability — allowing two independent notes to play simultaneously through a shared filter — gives it harmonic possibilities that a pure monosynth cannot achieve.
The Sub 37/Subsequent 37 has been documented in accounts of Hansen’s studio setup in the period leading up to the Infinite Health era, where the Moog family collectively — Minimoog, Prodigy, Sub 37, Matriarch — formed the analog heart of a hybrid hardware-software studio.
Moog Matriarch
The Moog Matriarch is a four-note paraphonic semi-modular synthesizer that Moog released in 2019. Where the Minimoog Model D is a sealed system with a fixed signal path, the Matriarch’s patchbay opens up its architecture, allowing the player to reroute signals, create feedback loops, and explore territory that the classic Moog design never intended.
Hansen has identified the Matriarch alongside the Minimoog and Prodigy as staples of the current Tycho sound. Its semi-modular capabilities appeal to his documented interest in “harnessing artefacts that aren’t supposed to be there” — the part of his process that actively seeks out unintended sonic events and treats them as compositional material. The Matriarch’s four-voice paraphony also gives it a harmonic richness that pure monosynths cannot achieve, making it useful for the layered pad textures that are central to Tycho’s recordings.
The Matriarch was retained after the 2023 Reverb sale and appears prominently in Hansen’s post-sale studio. It represents the new Moog in his collection: the warmth and physical character of the Moog ladder filter without the maintenance burden of vintage hardware.
The Roland Connection
Roland Juno-106 and the Softube Model 84
The Roland Juno-106’s relationship with Tycho is one of the project’s most interesting gear stories, because it exists primarily through emulation rather than dedicated hardware. Roland’s 1984 six-voice polysynth — designed as an affordable, practical instrument for working musicians — has a sound so deeply embedded in Tycho’s aesthetic that to describe it requires reaching for visual metaphors: warm, wide, shimmering pads that sit behind the mix like a wash of diffused light.
The Juno-106’s signature comes from two sources working together. Its IR3109 resonant low-pass filter has a quality that experienced synthesizer players consistently describe as “sweet” — smooth rather than aggressive, warm rather than bright, responsive without being dramatic. And its built-in BBD (bucket brigade delay) chorus circuit is the single most important component in the instrument’s sonic identity. Roland’s engineers calibrated the chorus depth and modulation rate with exceptional precision, finding a setting that creates three-dimensional width and shimmer without destabilizing the pitch. The MN3009 and MN3101 chips that power it introduce their own noise floor and non-linear behavior, and those physical imperfections are exactly what produce the warmth the ear receives.
Hansen has praised the Softube Model 84 — a software emulation of the Juno-106 — with unusual directness: he called it “one of the best soft synths ever made” and observed that Softube’s synth plugins “seem way ahead of everybody else’s.” More significantly, he credited the Model 84 with directly sparking the idea for the title track of Infinite Health (2024). When a plugin inspires a composition rather than merely executing one, the distinction between the tool and the instrument collapses.
MusicTech awarded the Model 84 a perfect 10/10 score, describing its sound as “almost a perfect facsimile of the Juno-106.” The critical consensus and Hansen’s endorsement together make a case that is unusual in the history of synthesizer emulation: the copy has reached a quality where the original question — hardware or software? — simply stops being useful.
The Juno-106’s sonic signature runs through the Tycho catalog as its most pervasive and least announced presence. It is not a lead sound or a defining riff. It is the atmosphere — the harmonic context in which everything else happens. “A Walk” from Dive, “Montana” from Awake, the pad layers throughout Epoch and Weather, and the title track of Infinite Health — all carry the characteristic Juno quality: sustained polyphonic chords with that unique chorus shimmer, occupying the middle register with a warmth that makes surrounding sounds feel more spacious and emotionally present.
The “Phantom” lead single from Infinite Health also uses a Juno-style bassline that Hansen described as “something pretty new for me” in terms of style and approach — confirming that the Juno’s influence extended beyond the background pads and into the album’s foreground compositional elements.
Roland SH-101
The Roland SH-101 — a beloved monosynth from 1982 known for its punchy bass lines and distinctive modulation capabilities — has been associated with Tycho’s setup through gear documentation, though Hansen has not discussed it at length in available interviews. Its simple, immediate character makes it a natural fit in a collection built around direct, expressive synthesis, but its documented contribution to specific Tycho recordings is limited in the available sources.
Roland MC-303

Sequential and the Prophet Lineage
Sequential Circuits Prophet-5 Rev 3
Hansen acquired a Sequential Circuits Prophet-5 Rev 3 (serial number 1995) and described it as an “indispensable newcomer” to his studio setup. The Prophet-5 is one of the most celebrated synthesizers in history — the first fully programmable polyphonic synthesizer, designed by Dave Smith in 1978 — and its warm, woody character made it an immediate fit for Tycho’s sound.
Hansen has spoken about the Prophet-5’s personality with characteristic precision. You cannot, he noted, simply layer multiple Prophet-5 sounds together: “You can’t just have layers of Prophet-5 — that’s just going to be a disaster.” His approach to mixing requires understanding that each synthesizer occupies specific bandwidth and has specific character: “If you’re going to have some big, warm, blobby giant sound in the mix, you’ve only got room for one of those synths.” The Prophet-5 earned its place by filling a role no other instrument in the collection could.
For Infinite Health (2024), Hansen paired the Prophet-5 with an Elektron Analog Heat — a dedicated hardware saturation processor — for the opening of “Consciousness Felt.” Hansen later acknowledged this intro as one of the album’s irreplaceable analog moments: “I just don’t think I could have created that with plugins.” The combination of the Prophet’s vintage warmth and the Analog Heat’s saturation created the textured, evolving pad that sets the tone for the entire record.
The Prophet-5 Rev 3 was sold in the 2023 Reverb sale, listed in “remarkably clean condition” with only “minor scuffs.”
Prophet-6
Dave Smith’s modern reimagining of the Prophet-5 architecture, the Prophet-6, brings discrete VCOs and a more tightly voiced character than the original’s loose, slightly variable tuning. Where the original Prophet-5 was sold in the 2023 sale, the Prophet-6 represented the evolution of that lineage — a six-voice analog polysynth with classic Sequential warmth in a format designed for the demands of modern studio and live performance. Its role in Tycho’s work occupies the same functional space as the Prophet-5: warm polyphonic chords with the characteristic woody midrange that Sequential’s instruments have always delivered.
OB-6
The OB-6 — a collaboration between Dave Smith and Tom Oberheim, released in 2016 — combines Smith’s discrete VCO design with Oberheim’s SEM-inspired filter topology. The result is an instrument with a frothy, organic character that sits distinctly apart from the Prophet-6’s more polished sound. The OB-6’s Oberheim heritage and six-voice polyphony made it a natural complement to Hansen’s FVS-1 during the Epoch and Weather eras, offering Oberheim tones with modern stability and MIDI integration alongside the original hardware.
The Oberheim Modern Era
Oberheim OB-X8
When Reverb visited Hansen’s studio in August 2023, he referred to his recently acquired Oberheim OB-X8 as a “modern classic.” Released by Oberheim in 2022, the OB-X8 is a direct descendant of the iconic OB-X, OB-Xa, and OB-8 synthesizers — the instruments that defined the polyphonic analog sound of the early 1980s. Tom Oberheim designed the OB-X8 as a summation of everything he had learned across those three designs, with all three voice architectures accessible from a single instrument.
For Hansen, who had spent years working with the Four Voice FVS-1 — the primitive ancestor of Oberheim’s polyphonic line — the OB-X8 represented a full-circle moment. The FVS-1’s magic came from its unpredictability, the way its four independent SEM voices created organic, living textures. The OB-X8 captures that Oberheim character in a modern, reliable, studio-ready package.
The OB-X8 was retained after the 2023 sale and appears as one of the anchor instruments of the current studio. Selling the vintage Oberheim while keeping the modern one was a precise articulation of Hansen’s post-sale philosophy: he loves the sound, but he no longer needs the headaches.
Vintage Korg: The Japanese Contributions
Korg ARP Odyssey
Hansen listed the Korg ARP Odyssey reissue among his studio standouts. He appreciated it despite never having played an original Odyssey. The instrument’s duophonic capabilities and distinctive ring modulator give it a sound quite different from the Moog monosynths in Hansen’s collection — brighter, more metallic, with an aggressive edge that can cut through layers of reverb and compression where softer synthesis approaches disappear.
Roland Jupiter-6
Hansen owned a Roland Jupiter-6 at one point but has admitted he did not fully understand it at the time. The Jupiter-6 is a complex instrument — a six-voice analog polysynth with extensive modulation capabilities and one of the first synths to feature MIDI — and its depth can be overwhelming. Hansen’s candid acknowledgment that he did not connect with the Jupiter-6 is a reminder that chemistry between player and instrument matters as much as the instrument’s reputation. Not every legendary synthesizer works for every musician.
The Software Synth Collection
Softube Model 84 (Roland Juno-106 Emulation)
Covered in detail above in the Roland section. The single most important software synthesizer in Tycho’s current arsenal, responsible for directly inspiring Infinite Health’s title track, and the emulation that Hansen has publicly declared “one of the best soft synths ever made.”
Universal Audio Minimoog Emulation
The Universal Audio plugin suite — accessed through Hansen’s Apollo interfaces and the UAD hardware ecosystem — includes a Minimoog emulation that Hansen has acknowledged he now reaches for more often than his actual 1972 hardware unit in studio sessions. The admission is significant coming from someone who built his reputation partly on the specific qualities of the original hardware. The UA emulation offers recall-perfect session states, smooth integration with his REAPER workflow, and parameter automation that the hardware cannot provide.
Native Instruments Monark
Before the Moog Model D reissue made it practical to tour with a real Minimoog, Hansen relied on NI Monark for live shows. He described it as “really close to the real thing” and “almost indiscernible from a real Mini for some sounds.” The Monark served as Tycho’s live Minimoog voice for several years and remains a core software instrument in his toolkit. It demonstrates the pragmatic thread in Hansen’s approach: when the emulation is good enough for the job, the emulation wins.
Arturia V Collection (Jupiter 8V, CS-80V)
Hansen has cited two Arturia products by name as go-to software instruments. The Arturia Jupiter 8V — an emulation of Roland’s flagship Jupiter-8 polysynth — and the Arturia CS-80V — an emulation of the Yamaha CS-80, one of the most celebrated and expensive polyphonic synthesizers ever made. Both appeared in Hansen’s ISO50 “Studio Standouts” feature and have been referenced across multiple interviews as part of his regular software instrument rotation.
The CS-80V was directly credited with the lead sound on “Ascension” from Dive — an early example, from the very record that established Tycho’s mature identity, of Hansen choosing a plugin over hardware when the plugin had the right sound. The Jupiter-8 and CS-80 are foundational polysynths whose voices map naturally onto the pad-heavy compositional approach central to Tycho’s recordings. In software form, they give Hansen access to sounds that the hardware versions — both rare and extremely expensive — would make impractical to own.
XILS-Lab XILS 3 (EMS VCS3 Emulation)
Hansen mentioned the XILS 3 VCS3 emulation among his preferred software synthesizers. The XILS 3 models the EMS VCS3, a semi-modular British synthesizer famous for its use by Pink Floyd and Brian Eno. Its inclusion in Hansen’s toolkit reflects his interest in experimental, textural synthesis — the same impulse that drew him to the Korg MS-20’s semi-modular capabilities.
Korg MS-20 Plugin
As noted in the Dive era section: Hansen used the official Korg MS-20 plugin for the lead sound on the “Dive” title track, even while owning the hardware unit. The plugin’s specific sonic character — different from the hardware in ways Hansen found appropriate for that composition — is the clearest early example of his documented willingness to choose software over hardware when the sounds diverge from each other.
Korg Polysix Legacy Plugin
Similarly, the “Awake 2nd lead” was tracked using the Korg Polysix legacy plugin rather than the hardware Polysix. The fluid movement between hardware and its software representation characterizes Hansen’s entire relationship with synthesis: the sound matters, not the source.
The 2023 Reverb Gear Sale
On September 20, 2023, The Official Tycho Reverb Shop went live on Reverb.com. More than 100 pieces of studio equipment — synthesizers, effects processors, mixing consoles, compressors, preamps, tape machines — all listed at fixed prices, all shipped with signed and embossed Certificates of Authenticity. This was not a bankruptcy sale or a creative crisis. It was a working artist at the peak of his powers choosing to dismantle the very studio that had produced some of the most celebrated records of the preceding fifteen years.
What Was Sold
The synthesizers and keyboards sold in the 2023 sale included:
Oberheim FVS-1 — approximately $30,000, the most expensive single item in the sale. The defining instrument of the Dive era, used across three albums for pads, atmospheres, basses, and leads.
Sequential Circuits Prophet-5 Rev 3 — listed in “remarkably clean condition.” The polyphonic centerpiece of the Epoch-era palette, known for its warm, immediate woody character.
Moog Voyager — Bob Moog’s final synthesizer design and a beloved instrument that many would consider unsellable. Its inclusion confirmed that the sale was comprehensive and genuine.
Korg Trident — acquired because of Boards of Canada, sold with multiple cosmetic issues and a damaged veneer. A working instrument that showed its years of service.
Korg Polysix — listed as non-functional, requiring repair. Even in broken condition, its provenance gave it collector value.
MIDI MINI by Studio Electronics (serial 1657) — a rackmount Minimoog-inspired monosynth sold with its original flight case, sticky buttons, and scratchy outputs.
Siel OR 400 — an Italian-made polysynth from the early 1980s, one of the more obscure pieces in the collection.
ARP Omni-2 — listed as powering up but emitting a faint burning smell, with intermittent signal and non-functional parameters.
Yamaha CS01 — a tiny battery-powered monosynth from 1982, described as “very dusty/dirty” with a defective battery compartment.
Notable non-synth items included the Neve 54 Series mixer (used extensively on Epoch), the Roland RE-201 Space Echo (a tape delay central to Hansen’s signal chain for fifteen years), the Ursa Major Stargate 626 reverb, the Eventide H3000, the SSL G-Comp, and the Chandler Limited LTD-1.

Why He Sold
Hansen’s explanation was characteristically direct. The core statement, given to MusicTech: “I started to get this weird sense of guilt. Like, I’m sitting here on this amazing thing that somebody could put to use and do something awesome with. Instead, it’s sitting in a closet, decaying away.”
He framed the sale as the latest iteration of something he had always done — cycling gear in and out as his creative needs evolved — scaled up to an entire studio’s worth of material at once. The practical catalyst was a genuine shift in his relationship with software: “There’s just so many options… my gear lust has switched from hardware to software.”
The personal dimension was equally significant. By 2023 Hansen had a three-year-old and a one-year-old. Fatherhood compressed the hours available for studio work and eliminated the time previously available for maintaining temperamental vintage hardware. “I’ve been trying to come up with a more sustainable way of going about all this and being able to envision myself doing this in 10 years.” The gear sale was part of that sustainability architecture.
The Access Virus: A Digital Instrument Treated as Analog
Access Virus C KB / Indigo Redback
The Access Virus has been the other half of Tycho’s core synthesizer duo for nearly as long as the Minimoog. If the Minimoog is the heart — warm, organic, responsive — the Virus is the brain: versatile, deep, capable of sounds that no analog instrument can produce.
Hansen’s relationship with the Virus line is specific and opinionated. He owns a Virus C KB (keyboard version) and a Virus C Indigo Redback (a limited-edition desktop unit), and these are the models he has kept across two decades. When Access released the TI line with updated 24-bit converters, Hansen bought a Virus TI Polar, played it, and sold it. He found it “too sterile, too pristine.” The magic of the C-series, he explained, was in the converters: “When it comes to VAs, I think it’s all about the converters… They were warm and gritty, you could really feel the sound.”
This is a revealing distinction. The Virus is a virtual analog synthesizer — it generates sounds digitally. But Hansen does not treat it as a digital instrument. He treats it as an analog instrument that happens to be implemented in code, and the character of its digital-to-analog conversion is, for him, as important as its synthesis engine. The C-series converters added warmth and darkness to the output that made the Virus sit in a mix like hardware. When Access “improved” the converters in the TI line, they removed the very quality that made the instrument special.
The Access Virus C is also notable for its built-in reverb, which Hansen has cited as among his favorite reverb sounds — a quality that makes the instrument a self-contained sound design station in addition to its role as a pure synthesizer.
Both Virus units survived the 2023 sale and remain in the active studio and live rig.
The Korg Minilogue: The Modern Workhorse
The Korg Minilogue holds a unique position in the Tycho catalog: it is the rare modern, affordable synthesizer that Hansen has embraced as a primary instrument rather than a curiosity. On his ISO50 blog, he listed the Minilogue as his “most used” synth and “best new synth overall” — a remarkable endorsement for a keyboard that costs a fraction of the vintage gear surrounding it in his studio.
The Minilogue was the key synthesizer on Epoch (2016), appearing prominently on tracks like “Glider” and serving as the lead sound on “Easy.” Hansen intentionally used it to create sonic continuity between Epoch and Weather (2019), threading the Minilogue’s voice through both records as a unifying element. Its appeal likely comes from its simplicity and immediacy — a four-voice analog polysynth with a clean, direct interface where every parameter has a dedicated knob. For a producer who values “playing the effects just like you’re playing the instruments,” the Minilogue’s lack of menu-diving and hands-on design philosophy make it an ideal front end for the elaborate effects chains that define Tycho’s sound.
The Minilogue was confirmed as featured throughout Infinite Health (2024), appearing alongside the Juno-106 sound as one of the album’s core synthesizer voices. It also travels with Tycho on tour, forming part of the live rig alongside the Minimoog reissue and the Access Virus — its compact size, digital tuning stability, and affordability making it practical for the road in ways that vintage hardware never could be.
Teenage Engineering OP-1
The Teenage Engineering OP-1 has been associated with Tycho’s process in its role as a compositional tool rather than a primary recording instrument. The OP-1’s appeal for producers who primarily work in larger studio environments is its portability and its immediacy: a self-contained synthesizer, sampler, effects processor, and four-track recorder small enough to carry on an airplane. For sketching ideas away from the studio, capturing melodic concepts or rhythmic foundations during travel or downtime, the OP-1 occupies a role as a notebook rather than a canvas.
Hansen’s documented interest in self-contained, portable creative tools — and his recurring emphasis on the importance of capturing ideas quickly before the compositional moment passes — aligns with what the OP-1 offers. While specific album credits for OP-1 material are limited in the documented record, the instrument’s presence in accounts of Tycho’s broader creative process places it in the category of ideation tools that feed the larger studio work rather than appearing in it directly.
Hardware Versus Software: An Evolving Philosophy
Hansen’s philosophy about hardware versus software is one of the most carefully documented and most genuinely evolved positions in contemporary music production. It has changed substantially over two decades, and the changes are real rather than rhetorical.
The Early Position: Analog Sound Sources, Digital Recording
Through the Dive and Awake eras, Hansen’s approach could be summarized as analog sound sources entering a digital recorder. Synthesizers, preamps, compressors, and effects were physical objects. The DAW was a tape machine substitute that happened to offer non-destructive editing. He articulated a specific sonic rationale: analog equipment provides color and character at each stage of the signal path, and the cumulative effect of passing audio through multiple analog circuits creates harmonic complexity that is difficult to replicate with a single plugin. “If it goes through all the transformers and circuitry of analog hardware to get it into the box, that’s where I feel like it adds that kind of magic.”
This was not mere fetishism. Hansen could speak precisely about why the Virus C-series converters were warmer than the TI-series, or why the 1972 Minimoog sounded different from the 1976 model. His hardware preferences were grounded in specific acoustic phenomena: harmonic saturation from transformer circuits, the particular behavior of analog filter slopes, the way optical compression responds differently to transients than VCA compression. He built his collection around instruments that could produce these qualities.
The Middle Period: Pragmatic Hybridism
By the Epoch and Weather era, the balance had shifted. Hansen estimated that 80% of Epoch was made with plugins. The practical reality of producing dense arrangements as a primary force — rather than delegating to a separate mixing engineer with a large console — meant that in-the-box processing was a capability multiplier, not a compromise. Analog summing remained in the chain, but the reverbs, delays, and most of the synthesis were software.
During this period Hansen developed the principle that would anchor his philosophy: “I love synths and I love what they do, but I’m more interested in how to sculpt them after the fact.” Effects chains — the Strymon BigSky, the Chase Bliss Tonal Recall, the three separate Strymon Decos — were as important to the sound as the synthesizers themselves. “You’re playing the effects just like you’re playing the instruments.”
The Current Position: Software as Primary, Hardware as Exception
The transformation completed around Infinite Health. After the 2023 sale, Hansen stated his position with clarity: “If there’s a software equivalent of a tool or an instrument, I’m going to use that instead of the hardware, no matter what.” He acknowledged the apparent contradiction coming from someone with his history: “The argument of sound is over, it’s just more about workflow.”
The rationale was not that software sounds better than hardware. It was that software had reached parity in sound quality while offering dramatically superior workflow flexibility. On Infinite Health, he could place a delay before an amplifier simulation and reverse the order a week later. Commitment to a signal chain path — the fundamental reality of hardware recording — was no longer required when the emulation was good enough.
He also offered the broader observation that “the most basic DAWs have enough tools in them to be able to make, like, 90 per cent of all music ever created.” Coming from someone who spent two decades accumulating vintage hardware, the statement reads less as minimalist advocacy than as a recognition that the instrument matters less than the player’s understanding of what they want from it.
Yet hardware was not abandoned. The Moog Matriarch, the Moog Prodigy, the Oberheim OB-X8, and the Korg Minilogue all survived the sale. The difference is that these are now choices made for specific creative reasons — the physical resistance of knobs, the inspiration factor of turning a real filter by hand, the way a semi-modular patchbay creates unexpected interactions that no plugin menu can replicate — rather than default assumptions about quality. Software is the baseline. Hardware is the exception that proves the rule.
The Live Performance Rig: Synthesizers on Stage
Translating the Tycho studio sound to a live performance context involves a specific set of compromises and solutions that have evolved across multiple tour cycles.
The central challenge is this: the studio sound is built on vintage hardware that cannot reliably survive a touring schedule. A 1972 Minimoog Model D is too fragile, too temperature-sensitive, and too irreplaceable to carry on tour. The solution, documented from the earliest Dive-era touring, was meticulous multi-sampling: every key of the vintage instruments recorded at multiple velocity layers to capture their non-linearities, then loaded into Native Instruments Kontakt patches on the touring rig.
The live synthesizer presence is built around instruments that combine analog character with modern reliability. The Korg Minilogue provides genuine analog warmth with digital tuning stability and instant patch recall. The Moog Matriarch handles the complex overlapping textures that are central to the more elaborate live arrangements, leveraging its internal dual analog delay circuits to create evolving soundscapes. The Access Virus C (or in earlier configurations the TI2 Desktop, used primarily as a MIDI controller triggering software instruments) provides versatile digital synthesis with the instant recall that live performance demands. The Minimoog Model D reissue delivers the Minimoog voice without the risk of the original hardware.
The Access Virus TI2 Desktop’s role in the live rig at various points was specifically as a premium MIDI controller: its robust metal chassis, array of assignable encoders, and quality keybed made it an ideal physical interface for modulating software parameters in real time, even when the actual synthesis was happening in software running on the REAPER-based touring computer.
Alongside these are the Arturia Jupiter 8V and CS-80V as primary polyphonic workhorses in the REAPER environment, and the Softube Model 84 for the Juno-106 sound that is central to the live versions of recent material.
The live rig is controlled from Hansen’s command station — custom-built retro-futuristic synth stands that reflect the project’s visual design language — with an elaborate pedalboard handling the effects processing that is as central to the live sound as the synthesizers themselves. Three Strymon Deco units, a Strymon BigSky, a Chase Bliss Tonal Recall, and multiple other pedals collectively transform the synthesizer outputs into the spatial, tape-saturated, reverb-drenched sound that audiences recognize as distinctively Tycho.

Custom Approaches and Signal Chain Philosophy
Hansen’s synthesizer collection cannot be fully understood without understanding the signal chains through which those synthesizers operate. The synthesizer in isolation is one thing; the synthesizer through Hansen’s specific processing architecture is the Tycho sound.
The most distinctive technique is compression after reverb. Standard practice places compression before reverb; the compressor controls the dynamics of the dry signal, and the reverb is applied to the compressed output. Hansen inverts this. Heavy compression placed after reverb raises the volume of the reverb tails, sustaining them at a level co-equal with the dry signal. He has described the effect: “Creating chords using reverb is kind of my signature. It’s just the reverbs and delays overlapping with other notes to create these engaging sounds.” A monophonic Minimoog note through heavy reverb, compressed to sustain at full volume, creates implied harmony from the instrument’s own decay — chords from a single voice.
Every synthesizer in Hansen’s studio passes through an analog front end on the way to the DAW. The Neve 1076 preamps, the 1176 compressors, the transformer-saturating circuits — these are part of the synthesizer’s voice in his workflow, coloring the digital oscillator output with harmonic richness that sits in the mix differently from unprocessed digital synthesis. “If it goes through all the transformers and circuitry of analog hardware to get it into the box, that’s where I feel like it adds that kind of magic.”
The signal chain’s role in the live rig is equally central. At front of house, Peter Franco — a multi-Grammy-winning engineer who has worked with Daft Punk — runs analog outboard gear including Empirical Labs Distressors and Universal Audio LA-2A optical tube compressors to add the same harmonic saturation and compression character to the live mix that the studio’s hardware provides to the recordings. The synthesizers on stage are, in a real sense, completing only the first half of their journey. The rest happens in the processing that follows.
What Makes a Tycho Synth Sound
Across two decades of interviews, several consistent principles emerge for how Hansen selects and uses synthesizers.
The first is immediate playability over technical sophistication. The Minimoog is not the most versatile synthesizer he has owned. The Korg Minilogue is not the most expensive. The Juno-106 is architecturally simple to the point of being minimal. What these instruments share is that sitting down and playing them produces musical results quickly, without extensive programming or menu navigation. Hansen is not a synthesizer programmer in the conventional sense — he is a player, someone who responds to what an instrument offers rather than systematically exploring its capabilities.
The second is character over neutrality. Hansen has consistently rejected synthesizers that are “too sterile, too pristine” — the phrase he used when selling the Access Virus TI, whose improved converters had paradoxically made it less useful to him. Every synthesizer he has kept for extended periods has a specific, recognizable character: the Minimoog’s particular ladder filter fatness, the Virus C’s warm gritty conversion, the Juno-106’s BBD chorus shimmer, the Minilogue’s clean but distinctly analog voice. Character is the property that makes a synthesizer an instrument rather than a tool.
The third is the inspiration factor. Hansen has spoken repeatedly about why he keeps hardware even as he increasingly uses software: the physical act of turning a knob, adjusting a filter by hand, patching a semi-modular system, produces creative decisions that sitting with a mouse and plugin would not generate. “I’m more interested in how to sculpt them after the fact” does not mean the initial sound is irrelevant. It means the initial sound should come easily, from physical engagement with the instrument, and the sculpting should then transform it.
The fourth is limitation as creative force. Despite owning, at various points, some of the most capable synthesizers in existence, Hansen has consistently advocated for working with a small, fixed set of tools: treating favorite plugins “like a piece of hardware that I own.” The Tycho sound’s coherence across a discography spanning more than twenty years comes partly from this deliberate self-limitation — using the same instruments repeatedly, learning their specific voices, building a sonic identity out of what those specific instruments can offer rather than chasing novelty with each project.
These principles explain both what Hansen has kept and what he has sold. The Oberheim Four Voice was sold not because its sound was no longer useful but because its maintenance demands, tuning instability, and high monetary value sitting idle were no longer serving the creative process. The Minimoog was kept not because it is irreplaceable sonically — the UA emulation now covers much of that ground — but because it is irreplaceable emotionally, the instrument through which Hansen learned what he knows about synthesis, the object that carries the accumulated memory of twenty years of making music.
The synthesizer collection is, in this sense, a record of a particular creative intelligence finding and discarding tools as his understanding of what he wanted from them evolved. What remains — the Minimoog, the Matriarch, the Minilogue, the OB-X8, the Virus C, and the software instruments that have joined them — is a portrait of what Tycho is in 2024: analog at heart, hybrid in practice, warm in aspiration, and always, above all, in pursuit of the sound that sounds like a specific quality of light.
